Cantalupo In Sabina: Culture, Architectural History and Park
Accommodation in Cantalupo In Sabina
Cantalupo In Sabina combines historic buildings with Parco Camuccini and activities related to agriculture and local products. This offers different ways to plan your trip: you can explore the town’s history, plan short walks, or combine a visit with insights into agriculture and crafts.
Gate, Palazzo and Churches
Porta Maggiore, also called Porta dell'Orologio, is the main gate of Cantalupo in Sabina. Two statues stand on the gate, dedicated to the deities Mercury and Minerva and commonly known as “Bammocci.” Another landmark in the town’s architectural history is Palazzo Camuccini: it stands on the site of the former Savelli castle, which was built on an existing Roman structure.
Religious buildings also reflect different historical periods. The Chiesa di Maria Santissima Assunta in cielo was rebuilt after the 1703 earthquake and reconsecrated in 1774. Outside Cantalupo, the Chiesa di Sant'Adamo stands along a former main road to the town. The route passes between oak trees and offers views of the hilly landscape. The church is associated with the people of Cantalupo’s thousand-year veneration of the hermit Adamo.
The Chiesa di San Biagio Fuori le Mura and the adjoining Carmelite monastery are privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. The complex gave its name to the Cantalupo melon: the monks were the first to grow the fruit, introduced from Asia, and gave it the appearance and aroma known today.
Parco Camuccini and Agriculture
The four-hectare Parco Camuccini lies on the edge of the historic center. It is home to centuries-old trees from different parts of the world, including rare Ginkgo biloba trees. You can take short walks in the park or sit on a bench in the shade of mature trees. Botanical highlights sit alongside an easy opportunity to walk and rest.
Quercia Madre adds an agricultural dimension as a certified organic farm founded to protect Cantalupo’s thousand-year-old oak. During a visit, you can walk through nature and among fields of ancient grain varieties. Farm visits are possible year-round with five days’ advance notice. Another activity is a workshop on making natural soaps and ointments, where you can try cold-process soapmaking and make organic ointments.
Local Products and Events
The Fiera contadina a Sant'Adamo is recognized by a papal bull issued by Pope Pius IX on December 9, 1848. One edition took place on May 12, 2024. Local products were on offer at the fair; the Pro Loco served zero-kilometer dishes made with exhibitors’ products, and workshops demonstrated how some artisanal products are made.
The Mostra Mercato delle Stagioni takes place on the second Sunday of March, June, September and December. However, individual editions may have different dates. If you want to plan your trip around the market, check the dates of the specific edition before making plans. Terra Folk in Sabina is listed for the Comune di Cantalupo in Sabina in the regional register of folklore festivals for 2024–2027.
Walks and Routes Through Multiple Towns
The Cammino dei Borghi Sabini passes through Cantalupo in Sabina and other towns in the Province of Rieti. Its route is still being verified; the GPX track is recommended for navigation. It differs in scale from the short walks in Parco Camuccini: the park offers a setting for short walks, while the named Cammino connects multiple towns.
