Discover Canneto: History, Tradition and Routes
Accommodation in Canneto
For a stay in Canneto, you can focus on its cultural history, local festival traditions or walking routes. Piazza Luigi Pacieri is recommended as a central starting point for a visit of about an hour. Historic sites and specific route distances offer different points of reference for planning your day.
Routes for planning your stay
The Via di Francesco trail reaches Canneto’s first houses. The section starting at the beginning of Via Catone is 1.8 kilometres long, with 60 metres of ascent and 100 metres of descent. The route from Canneto to Acquaviva di Nerola is 5.5 kilometres long. It is estimated to take about one hour and ten minutes, with 120 metres of ascent and 120 metres of descent.
The section from Via Catone is shorter and has more descent than ascent. The route to Acquaviva is longer, with equal amounts of ascent and descent, and an estimated duration of around one hour and ten minutes. You can compare the routes by distance, elevation profile and estimated time.
Churches and medieval history
On the medieval site of Santa Maria della Neve, also known as Santa Maria di Canneto, the monks of Farfa established one of their most important agricultural estates and built a chapel there. The larger, more recent church in the complex dates from the 16th century and is dedicated to Madonna della Neve. The 14th- to 15th-century chapel of Santa Maria di Canneto is the complex’s central work of art and is now used as a sacristy.
The two buildings differ both in age and in function: the chapel is central to the complex’s art history and is now used as a sacristy, while the newer, larger church is dedicated to Madonna della Neve. Another point of reference in time is the Church of San Rocco in Canneto, built in 1893. It adds a later chapter to the history of the medieval site and its older buildings.
The Ulivone as a symbol of Sabina
The Ulivone is a thousand-year-old olive tree in Canneto and is considered a symbol of Sabina and its olive groves. Alongside the churches and chapels, it offers a different perspective on the area: the tree brings the region’s olive-growing landscape into focus. If you would like to explore Canneto beyond its architectural history, the Ulivone offers a distinctive point of interest.
Local traditions and festival programmes
The Sagra della Pizza Fritta Cannetana is a historic local tradition that returns in successive editions. The Carnevale dei Bambini di Canneto Sabino is also a long-standing local tradition. Pro Canneto has organised it continuously since the association was founded.
The Festa dell’olio nuovo took place in Canneto Sabino on 8 and 9 November 2025. The programme for that edition included tastings of new olive oil from several oil mills in Sabina, as well as guided visits to nearby oil mills. If you plan to time your trip around this festival, check the current dates before travelling.
