Sperlonga combines archaeological history with a medieval townscape and a distinctive coastal landscape. When planning your trip, you can focus on different aspects: architectural history, nature, local produce or the religious events in September. If you are looking for a hotel in Sperlonga, first consider which of these sides of the destination matters most to you during your stay.

Villa of Tiberius and Historic Sites

The Villa of Tiberius extended for more than 300 metres along Sperlonga’s eastern beach. The complex included a thermal bath facility. It also featured a circular pool connected to other outdoor pools and used for high-quality fish farming. Taken together, these details link the villa’s size with two distinct uses: bathing and fish farming.

Sanctae Mariae de Sperlonche adds a religious landmark to the history of the town. It is Sperlonga’s oldest church. Alongside the extensive villa, it offers a distinct point of reference in the history of the Church and reflects its long-standing significance to the town.

Townscape and Sea Views

The medieval centre sits on a rocky promontory. Lanes, stairways and vaulted passageways lead to viewpoints overlooking the sea. You can also explore the townscape through its routes and changes in elevation: views of the sea are linked to several points across its network of lanes and steps.

The terrace of Torre Truglia also offers a sweeping view of the sea. In the medieval centre, routes lead to viewpoints, while the view from Torre Truglia is specifically associated with its terrace. This means you can experience the coastal panorama in two different settings.

Coastal Landscape and Protected Areas

The natural monument “Monumento Naturale di Promontorio Villa di Tiberio e Torre Capovento Punta Cetarola” comprises sea-facing cliffs and rock faces, as well as paths with views of the Pontine Islands. Aleppo pines and rare dwarf palms grow on the coastal cliffs. Rock formations, paths and plant life each give the landscape their own distinctive character.

Another natural attraction is the Oasi Blu di Sperlonga. Managed by WWF Italia, this protected area lies near the Villa of Tiberius and covers about 11 hectares. As arrangements may change, check the latest information before making specific plans to visit.

Sedano Bianco di Sperlonga

A local product also offers a tangible insight into the region: Sedano Bianco di Sperlonga is an IGP product. Its production area includes Fondi and Sperlonga in the province of Latina. Its sweet, mildly aromatic flavour and particular suitability for fresh consumption describe the product more precisely than its name alone.

September: Patron Saints’ Festivals and Pilgrimage

Two patron saints’ festivals take place one after the other in September. The public festival in honour of the principal patron saint, San Leone Magno, takes place on the first Sunday in September. The following Monday, the public festival in honour of the co-patron saint, San Rocco, is held. If you would like to plan your trip around either celebration, check the exact dates for the year in question.

Another religious tradition is the popular Marian pilgrimage on foot to the Santuario Madonna della Civita in Itri (LT). It is part of the annual calendar of the parish of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo in Sperlonga and takes place in mid-September. The pilgrimage differs from the two patron saints’ festivals in its destination and its on-foot format.

Historic sites, the coastal landscape and local produce offer further themes to help you shape your stay in Sperlonga.
