Sonnino sits on a hill in the Monti Ausoni. Olive groves, holm oaks, oaks, and junipers alternate with Mediterranean maquis. At the same time, the town’s historic center, with its winding streets, stairways, towers, and gates, shapes its character. This combination makes Sonnino an interesting destination for a trip that takes in both landscape and history.

Hilly Landscapes and Campo Soriano

Campo Soriano is a distinctive natural attraction, a natural monument shared by the municipalities of Sonnino and Terracina. Among its striking formations is the Cattedrale, a limestone block about 18 meters high. Meteoric water has shaped it over millennia. But the area is not all rock: Campo Soriano features a mix of woods, Mediterranean maquis, clearings, and damp rock crevices. It is also home to numerous botanically significant species. The natural monument thus showcases both its striking geological formation and its variety of habitats.

A Hiking Trail with a Named Destination

Hiking trail CAI 533 begins in the built-up area of Sonnino and ends at Bourbon boundary marker No. 19 on the slopes of Monte Romano. Its start and destination provide clear reference points for the route. This differs from Campo Soriano’s natural features: CAI 533 focuses on the route and its destination marker, while Campo Soriano highlights its geological formations and diverse habitats.

Historic Center and Medieval Landmarks

The historic center lies within five entrance gates: Portella, Porta S. Pietro, Porta S. Giovanni, Porta di Tocco, and Porta Riore. Paths within the town walls connect these gates. Together with the winding streets and stairways, they shape the layout of the center; towers and gates are also part of its distinctive character.

Sonnino Castle, with its cylindrical tower, was built around the 9th century on Colle Sant’Angelo by Sonnino’s first lords. Two churches add to the historic picture, each dating from a later period: San Michele Arcangelo Church was built around 1210 and became the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie in 1947. The Collegiate Church of San Giovanni was built in 1200. These dates illustrate the town’s distinct building and religious histories without grouping the individual landmarks into a single period.

Museum and Festa delle Torce

The Museo delle Terre di Confine invites visitors to explore history and ethnography together through multisensory displays and ideas. This adds a thematic approach to the town’s landmarks, bringing historical and ethnographic connections into focus.

The Festa delle Torce is also part of Sonnino’s traditions. Held on the eve of the Feast of the Ascension, it is a procession and hike of about 30 kilometers along Sonnino’s boundaries. Compared with CAI 533, the two are described in different ways: the hiking trail has a named starting point and endpoint, while the Festa is defined by its timing, format, and approximate length. When weighing these themes as you plan your trip, you can use these specific details as a guide.

Handmade Pasta and Olive Oil

Local cuisine also has its own traditions: Caciaprete is a handmade pasta from Sonnino. The town’s olive oil production is prized for its quality, and its oil has received significant awards over many years. These two details represent different aspects of the culinary heritage: the handcrafted preparation of a traditional pasta and the longstanding recognition of olive oil production.
