Fondi combines a historic centre with significant buildings, archaeological collections and nature themes centred on Lake Fondi. The destination can be explored from several perspectives: from the historic centre and its different periods to the museum, birdlife, walking trails and local cuisine. If you’re looking for hotels in Fondi, you can consider whether cultural heritage, the lake and its birdlife, or other local themes are most important to you.

Lake Fondi and its birdlife

Fondi is located in the Monti Ausoni and Lake Fondi Regional Natural Park. Lake Fondi is a coastal transitional ecosystem where fresh and seawater meet. More than 100 bird species have been recorded in the lake area, including breeding birds, resident birds and migratory birds. The park authority can update the species count. The water and birdlife represent different aspects of the landscape: the meeting of fresh and seawater, and the different groups of birds recorded there.

Buildings from different periods

Fondi’s historic centre includes significant monuments from pre-Roman, Roman and medieval times. The Duomo di San Pietro was built in the 12th century on ancient pre-Roman structures, bringing together two historical periods in one place. The Chiesa di San Francesco and its associated convent were built in 1363. Castello Caetani stands exactly along the course of Fondi’s ancient walls and houses the “8 Ottobre” Archaeological Civic Museum. The buildings highlight different aspects of history: for the Duomo, the older structures on which it was built; for the Castello, the course of the ancient walls.

The archaeological museum

The Museo Archeologico città di Fondi, housed in Castello Caetani as the “8 Ottobre” Archaeological Civic Museum, has four exhibition rooms. They cover the history of the area from the earliest periods through to the Middle Ages. Today, the museum preserves around 400 finds from excavations and discoveries throughout the municipality of Fondi. This approximate number may change as objects are conserved or exhibited elsewhere. The exhibition thus combines a historical span reaching back to the Middle Ages with finds from across the municipality.

Trails and views

The CAI 919 trail starts at the Sant'Arcangelo entrance on S.P. Le Querce, within the municipality of Fondi. Access conditions and possible barriers may change, so check the park authority’s information before setting out. The area can be explored on foot, by mountain bike and on horseback along the trails and shores of Lake Fondi. From the summit of Monte Vele, the view reaches the Pontine Islands, Circeo, the Fondi Plain, the Monti Ausoni and Monti Ernici, and the Gulf of Gaeta. While activities at the lake focus on the trails and shores, at Monte Vele the emphasis is on the sweeping view from the summit.

Cuisine and film history

Traditional Fondi cuisine includes pasta with olives and pumpkin. Fondi is also associated with its famous blonde Fondane oranges. The dish and the oranges are two distinct culinary connections to the area: a specific pasta combination and a fruit associated with Fondi.

Film history also extends beyond Fondi into the region: director Giuseppe de Santis, who was born in Fondi, filmed “Giorni d’amore” in the southern Pontine area. Fondi is the director’s birthplace; at the same time, the film belongs to the history of the wider southern Pontine area.
