When looking for a hotel in Spigno Saturnia, it is worth considering your travel interests. The historic upper town and churches offer a glimpse of architectural history; the Museo Naturalistico del Parco dei Monti Aurunci focuses on nature and local traditions; and the mountain bike stage of the Cammino degli Aurunci offers cycling with a specific technical challenge. The Zeppolone De.Co. adds local food culture to the mix.

Elevation and the upper town

Spigno Saturnia Superiore lies at an elevation of 375 metres on the eastern slopes of Monte Petrella. The historic upper town has a defensive character: the houses are built close together, the lanes are narrow, and stairways also shape the townscape. This defensive character is reflected in the layout of the settlement, not just in a single building. If you prioritise historic townscapes when choosing a destination, this combination is a specific point to consider.

Churches and natural history

The Chiesa di Santa Croce dates back to the Middle Ages and was enlarged in the 18th century. The small rural Chiesa di San Gerardo is located at the source of Capodacqua; it may have been built at the end of the 17th century. The two churches offer different historical insights: Santa Croce’s architectural history includes its medieval origins and its enlargement in the 18th century, while the dating of San Gerardo is expressly tentative, placing its construction at the end of the 17th century. The Museo Naturalistico del Parco dei Monti Aurunci uses multimedia to present the geology and wildlife, as well as the local traditions, trees and plants of the protected area. Its subject matter brings together natural history and local traditions, while the churches focus attention on the histories of individual buildings.

Mountain bike stage and route

The second stage of the Cammino degli Aurunci is a mountain bike route from Spigno Saturnia Superiore to Maranola. It is 45 kilometres long and involves 1,800 metres of climbing. Its technical difficulty rating is BC; the stage is intended for technically experienced cyclists. These details are not interchangeable when choosing a ride: distance, climbing and technical grade each describe a different aspect of the stage. Together, they help you assess the route’s length and technical challenge. One stage of the Cammino degli Aurunci leaves Spigno Vecchio via an old path to the right of the Castello and joins the Via Pedemontana towards Selvacava. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Culinary tradition

The Zeppolone De.Co. is a speciality from Spigno Saturnia: a chicory omelette made from a recipe dating back to the 17th century. The Sagra delle Castagne e Zeppole Spignesi was also held over two weekends in mid-October for almost 40 years. Together, a named dish with a historic recipe and a festival held over a long period represent distinct aspects of local food culture.
