Maenza brings together a medieval market square at the main entrance to the historic town center, views across the Amaseno Valley, and trails between Monte Acuto and Monte Calvello. Culture, scenery, and hiking each offer a different focus. If you are planning a stay, these themes can help you decide whether to center it on the town center, the surrounding landscape, or a local tradition.

Culture in the historic town center

Piazza Coperta, a medieval market square on two levels, lies at the main entrance to the historic town center. The market and its architecture can be appreciated together: the square is defined both by its function and by its two-level layout. From the windows, the view stretches across the Amaseno Valley and the Pontine Plain to the sea and the Pontine Islands. San Giacomo adds to Maenza’s cultural and historical character; the church is considered the oldest in the town.

Views and the history of the Monti Lepini

Maenza sits on a hill; on a clear day, Ponza, Palmarola, and Zannone can be seen from there. The view of the islands from the hill differs from the one through the windows of Piazza Coperta: from there, the view stretches across the valley and plain to the sea and the Pontine Islands. The medieval Fortezza di Monte Acuto adds a historical dimension to the landscape. It lies between the western and eastern parts of the Monti Lepini and served as a watch post for the estates of the Counts De Ceccano. The Monti Lepini are also home to the subspecies Sciurus vulgaris italicus; its range includes the municipality of Maenza.

Hiking trail and changing vegetation

The hiking trail begins near the chapel of S. Luca in M. Acuto and leads to the summit of Monte Calvello. The vegetation changes from beech and hornbeam stands to Mediterranean maquis with holm oak forests. Maquis refers to Mediterranean shrubland.

Festivals and dates

The celebration of Saint Anthony the Great includes the blessing of bread and animals in the adjoining square, with pets especially in focus. Participants are also offered traditional hot chocolate made from an old recipe. A Pro Loco page published in 2021 gives the third Sunday in July as the date for the Festival Folklore Internazionale and describes its historical development from the Festival della Collina. Check the current dates if you are planning your trip around the celebration of Saint Anthony or the festival. In connection with the celebration of Saint Anthony the Great, the church of Sant’Antonio Abate was opened to the public on January 17.
