Castrocielo brings together nature, archaeological heritage and church art. Its attractions range from Lake Capo d’Acqua and the Castello di Castrum Coeli to Aquinum and the town’s religious artworks.

Scenery around Monte Cairo and Monte Asprano

At the foot of Monte Cairo lies the small Lago di Capo d’Acqua, fed by natural springs. The lake includes three hectares of protected wetlands. The Castello di Castrum Coeli offers a different landscape: it stands on Monte Asprano at an elevation of about 750 metres, overlooking the Liri Valley. The castle’s keep, parts of the fortress and several towers remain. Together, the lake and castle represent different aspects of Castrocielo’s landscape: a spring-fed lake with wetlands and the castle’s elevated position, with its view across the valley.

Aquinum and its archaeological remains

Aquinum was an ancient Roman colony dating from the time of Octavian, Mark Antony and Lepidus. The archaeological excavation area covers just under eight hectares. The Porta Capuana is one of the best-preserved monuments at Aquinum. The Museo Archeologico displays the necropolis of Campo Cavaliere. The museum also exhibits richly furnished women’s tombs found just outside Aquinum’s city walls, along the Via Latina. Castrocielo thus brings together different archaeological subjects: the extent of the excavation area, a surviving monument and finds from a necropolis.

Churches, altars and artworks

Each of Castrocielo’s churches has its own historical and artistic character. The Chiesa della Madonna di Loreto has three stucco altars; the main altar is dedicated to the Madonna di Loreto. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo was built on Monte Asprano in 1300. The Chiesa di Santa Lucia contains two paintings by Alfonso Simonetti depicting Saint Lucia before and after her martyrdom. The church’s consecration is dated to 1746.

The building history of the Chiesa della Madonna dei Sette Dolori can also be read in its furnishings: its original single-nave Romanesque plan was altered in the 18th century with the addition of three Baroque altars. The Chiesa di San Rocco serves as an art gallery and preserves frescoes from the Chiesa di Capodacqua and the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Monacato. Together, these examples show different approaches to church art: stucco altars, paintings and frescoes, alongside changes that have shaped a church’s floor plan.

Walking and special events

The Anello del Monte Asprano circular trail can be walked over one or more days. It is designed as a leisurely, accessible walking route for pilgrims, walkers, families and school groups.

At the Palio delle Contrade, Castrocielo’s seven districts—Capo d’Acqua, Campo Cavaliere, Centro, Rio, San Liberatore, Stazione and Strada Romana—compete in games inspired by local folk culture and tradition. The Passione Vivente di Castrocielo takes visitors on a route through the entire historic centre and includes four large-scale theatrical scenes: the Last Supper, the Garden of Gethsemane, the trial and the Crucifixion. For the Bacio delle Madonne, two processions from Castrocielo and Colle San Magno make their way to a mountain chapel. There, the two statues of the Madonna meet and symbolically kiss.

The Monacato di Villa Eucheria is suitable for civil wedding ceremonies, conferences, concerts and exhibitions. If you are travelling specifically for an event or activity, check the latest dates and the specific programme in advance.

A regional flavour

In the Bassa Ciociaria, Peperone Cornetto di Pontecorvo DOP peppers are grown and served sweet and sour on slices of toasted bread. This regional speciality complements the archaeological, religious and scenic attractions that shape a stay in Castrocielo.
