Alvito: Fortress, Old Town and Churches
Accommodation in Alvito
Alvito lies on the slopes of Monte Morrone. Castello Cantelmo is an old fortress on a hill above the Alvito plain. These geographical landmarks provide a setting for a stay that can explore both the landscape and the history of the town.
Town Centre and Route to Castello
The historic centre is characterised by small squares and very narrow, mostly stepped lanes. For planning your day, the route from the lower town to Castello offers a separate point of reference: a walk of about 50 minutes follows an old paved path to the fortress. If you include it in your plans, you can allow for the approximate walking time for this route and keep it separate from the rest of your stay in town. This places the town centre’s intricate layout and a specific route to Castello side by side as distinct perspectives.
Churches and Their Different Historical Contexts
The Collegiata Insigne di San Simeone was consecrated on 22 April 1574; its bell tower is one of the signal towers of the medieval town walls. The Chiesa di Santa Teresa is a Baroque church with a centralised plan; a short distance away, there are panoramic views over the Val di Comino. The Chiesa della SS. Trinità al Peschio is one of Alvito’s oldest churches and probably dates from the 12th century. The square in front of the church was the starting point of the old road to the castle.
The Chiesa di San Biagio stands just outside Alvito’s town walls. Its portico is near a medieval town gate on the former road linking Alvito and Vicalvi. The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Campo bears traces of Byzantine frescoes. Together, these churches represent a range of features: a precisely dated consecration, a probable medieval date, a centralised plan and traces of frescoes.
Palaces and Architectural Details
The Teatro comunale di Alvito is located in the former Sala del Trono of Palazzo Gallio, also known as Palazzo Ducale. The main rooms of Palazzo Mazzenga feature a variety of decorative details: painted wooden ceilings, stucco decorations and coffered ceilings. The floors often retain their old tiles. Palazzo Panicali has two dovecotes, making this a different feature from Mazzenga’s interior decoration. The private Palazzo Monaco retains its original furnishings within its 19th-century architectural appearance.
Landscape, Route and Festival
Fossa Maiura is a karst sinkhole about 100 metres deep. As a geological feature, it complements the themes of the hillside setting and historic buildings. The CAI SI P01 route runs from Pescasseroli via Alvito to Loc. Trichiano; conditions may vary seasonally. The Festa del Pan a Moll is held every year in Alvito to celebrate Pane Ammollo. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the exact dates in advance.
