Montattico: History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Montattico
Montattico combines a long local history with a strong connection to hiking trails. The town’s name is linked to the villa that Tito Pomponio Attico owned here in the 1st century BC. Medieval castle remains, the Torre di Avvistamento Medievale and Roman inscriptions offer different historical perspectives. At the same time, the Cammino delle Abbazie passes through Casalattico on its way to Montattico, and hiking trails lead to the Monti Obachelle and Marro mountain range. You can shape your stay around two interests: exploring traces of the past or making hiking trails a focus of your trip.
The watchtower and layers of history
The ruins of a medieval castle have been preserved in Montattico. The Torre di Avvistamento Medievale watchtower was built in the second half of the 11th century by Oderisio, Count of the Marsi. It was built on the ruins of Tito Pomponio Attico’s villa and was intended to serve as a lookout over the entire Valle di Comino. Roman and medieval history therefore meet here: the villa dates to the 1st century BC, and the tower to the second half of the 11th century.
The watchtower ruins offer spectacular views of the valley below. The exterior of the tower is freely accessible; guided visits are available by prior arrangement. When planning your visit, you can choose between exploring the freely accessible exterior and booking a guided tour.
Roman inscriptions and road construction
A Roman inscription in Montattico commemorates the freedman Pomponius Tigranus, who paid for a road for heavy carts to be built at his own expense. It connects ancient road construction with a specific person and purpose: the inscription names not only the builder but also the carts for which the road was intended.
Another inscription is carved into the rocky outcrop known as Pietra scritta. It can be seen from the mule track leading to Montattico. The carriage road mentioned at Pietra scritta led to Tito Pomponio Attico’s villa. Another road was built by Caio Pomponio Tigrano: in the 1st century AD, the freedman from the house of the Pomponii paid 1,500 sesterces to have a carriage road built.
Madonna della Pace and July 29
Madonna della Pace is venerated in Montattico on July 29. The tradition recalls the cholera outbreak that struck the village in 1837. The veneration has its historical origins in a solemn penitential procession: on July 29, 1837, residents processed through the streets of the village. The recurring date and the historical event are connected, but they are not the same: the procession is recorded as taking place in 1837, while the veneration of Madonna della Pace on July 29 continues as a local tradition. Alongside buildings and inscriptions, Montattico thus offers insight into a religious observance rooted in a specific event in the town’s history.
Hiking around Montattico
Stage 8 of the Cammino delle Abbazie passes through Casalattico on its way to Montattico. A CAI route description published in 2021 describes the first section, as far as Montattico, as well signposted. Its assessment of the section beyond Montattico is different: the signs are said to be difficult to spot, and a GPS device or a local guide is recommended. The route description dates from 2021; check trail conditions and signposting locally before setting out.
Impressive hiking trails lead from the hamlet of Montattico to the Monti Obachelle and Marro mountain range. These two hiking references address different planning questions: the stage information describes the route through Casalattico to Montattico, while the Monti Obachelle and Marro are the main destinations mentioned for the hiking trails. When choosing, you can consider whether a named stage or trails to the mountains mentioned here are more appealing to you.
