Discover Arnara: Rocca, Churches and Sagne e Fagioli
Accommodation in Arnara
Get to know Arnara through its historic castle, churches and local festival traditions. You can also enjoy views over the Valle del Sacco and try a specialty that was added to a national Italian list in 2024. The historic sites and festival dates offer different ways to plan your trip.
The Rocca and the town’s history
The medieval village grew up around a 9th-century castle, built on the remains of a Lombard tower. The Rocca di Arnara is first mentioned in 1097 in a document held at the Central Archives of Veroli. The castle retains towers and fortified entrances from its original layout. Arnara therefore brings together several historical periods: the early castle, its first recorded mention, and the development of the medieval village around it. Arnara also occupies a panoramic position above the Valle del Sacco.
Churches and their distinctive features
The Chiesa di San Nicola di Bari stands in the highest part of Arnara, a few metres from the ancient Rocca. The Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine was built toward the end of the 18th century during waterworks at the nearby spring. It is accessible to people with mobility impairments (as of October 31, 2024). If accessibility is important to your plans, confirm the current situation before your visit.
The history of the Chiesa di San Sebastiano also goes back a long way: it was completely rebuilt in 1731. It is Baroque in style, with a Greek-cross floor plan—that is, four arms of equal length. The Chiesa di Santa Maria, formerly Santa Maria di Capitignano, is believed to date from around 1300. It was originally flanked by a monastery of religious brothers devoted to the Virgin Mary. These distinct building histories and traditions give each church its own historical character.
Processions and local festivals
During the evening procession of the Madonna del Carmine, the statue is carried from its church to the Chiesa di San Nicola. The Festa della Madonna del Carmine is celebrated on July 16 with an elaborate floral carpet and a procession. The Festa di Santa Maria in Arnara is associated with the second Sunday in October and includes religious celebrations, evening entertainment and a fair.
The Ciambelle di San Sebastiano are also part of a local tradition: before the morning procession, the ciambelle are blessed and distributed to participants. The festival dates differ for travel planning: the Festa della Madonna del Carmine is set for July 16, while the Festa di Santa Maria takes place on the second Sunday in October. Check the dates before your trip if you want to plan your visit around one of these events.
Sagne e Fagioli from Arnara
The Sagra delle Sagne e Fagioli takes place every year on the second Saturday in September. At the festival, about a hundred women from Arnara make the pasta by hand and serve it to those in attendance. In March 2024, Sagne e Fagioli from Arnara were added to Italy’s national list of traditional agri-food products (PAT). This sets out a clear timeline for the dish and its recognition: it was added in March 2024, while the Sagra is held on a recurring date in September.
Arnara offers two distinct themes for planning a trip: the Rocca and churches highlight local history and architecture, while Sagne e Fagioli and the ciambelle tradition showcase local food and festivals. If you want to plan your trip around an event, the dates listed can help you choose when to visit.
