Filettino combines mountain scenery with churches, frescoes, and archaeological traces. If you are looking for a hotel in Filettino, you can start by considering which of these themes you want to shape your stay: trails and mountain ranges, the Aniene spring landscape, or art and local history. The sites also vary in scale—from a fresco in a church to a peak in the regional park.

Mountain Trails and Ridges

Monte Cotento, at 2,015 metres, rises above the settlement of Filettino. Hiking trail Percorso 694b starts in the town centre and heads towards Monte Viglio. At 2,156 metres, this peak is the highest in the Parco Naturale Regionale dei Monti Simbruini. From Filettino, trail 694b leads to it; the CAI rates the route EE. The elevation and this difficulty rating are specific factors to consider when choosing your hikes.

At the Aniene springs in Fiumata, two trails head in different directions. The one on the left climbs for 4 kilometres, gaining about 170 metres in elevation, to the slopes of Colle delle Fontane at 1,269 metres. The one on the right follows the Torrente Riglioso to near Fonte della Radica at 1,169 metres and is about 3 kilometres long. This gives you a longer climb alongside a route along the stream and a shorter stated distance. Trail conditions may vary; check them before setting out.

The Aniene Spring and the Landscape

The Fiume Aniene rises in Fiumata, in the municipality of Filettino. The municipal boundary also matters around Lago del Pertuso: the spring lies in Filettino, while the lake and dam belong to the municipality of Trevi nel Lazio. The IT6050029 Sorgenti dell’Aniene SAC includes priority habitats as well as endemic and threatened species, including wolves, Salamandrina and newts. At Belvedere del Cotardo, a viewing terrace offers views of mountains, valleys, forests, and Filettino.

Churches, Frescoes, and Archaeological Traces

The Chiesa di San Nicola, also called Abbazia dei SS. Nicola e Giovanni, is Filettino’s oldest church. It stands outside the town walls near the municipal cemetery and preserves fragments of frescoes dating to 1220, depicting the Last Judgement and the twelve apostles. Chiesa S. Bernardino is located below the current seat of the municipal administration. Its apse preserves frescoes from the second half of the 15th century.

Three kilometres outside Filettino, on the road between Trevi and Filettino, lie the Mura Saracene. They are 37 metres long and up to 7 metres high at their highest point; their construction is unmistakably Roman. In the Chiesa di San Giovanni, a fresco depicts the enthroned Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus. It belongs to the Umbrian-Marchigian school and is dated to around 1500.

The Parco Naturale Regionale dei Monti Simbruini contains 19th-century boundary markers. They marked the former boundary between the Papal States, to which Filettino belonged, and the Kingdom of Naples. The town’s history can therefore also be viewed in the broader context of historical boundary-making.

Museums and Traditions

The Museo dell’Arte e Civiltà contadina “Angela Cotoloni” is on the first floor of Palazzo Graziani. It displays objects, documents, and records relating to everyday life from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century. The Museo parrocchiale di arte sacra “Don Alessandro De Sanctis” contains furnishings, liturgical vestments, works of art, and liturgical silver.

For the Infiorata del Corpus Domini, flower carpets are usually created depicting scenes from the lives of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. The “Gli Animali del Bosco” exhibition at the Parco dei Simbruini visitor centre illustrates the lives of the park’s animals. Together with the churches and collections, these attractions make up a cultural offering that can inform your choice of stay alongside the mountain trails and spring landscape.
