Discover Coreno Ausonio through a range of themes: hiking trails connected with the Gustav Line, panoramic views from the summit of Monte Maio, and traces of history and local culture. The Sentieri Linea Gustav connect historic routes with coastal and mountain landscapes. There are also individual places where you can discover views, memories and regional traditions. Whichever of these aspects interests you most can give your trip its own focus.

Hiking Trails and Views of Monte Maio

The Sentieri Linea Gustav are hiking trails that bring together historic routes and a blend of coastal and mountain landscapes. From the trails, views extend to the western Aurunci Mountains and the Gulf of Gaeta, across the Pontine Islands to the Liri Valley hinterland. The mountains of Abruzzo and Molise are also in view. The vistas thus reveal more than one type of landscape: coast, islands and mountains lie side by side.

A separate trail leads to Monte Maio. It starts at Coreno Ausonio’s public park, passes through the hamlets of Riccio and Costa Carosa, and climbs to the summit. At an altitude of 940 metres, Monte Maio offers a viewpoint with panoramic views in every direction: you can see the Gulf of Gaeta, the Pontine Islands, the western Aurunci Mountains, the plains of Campania and the mountains of Abruzzo. The summit views complement those along the Sentieri Linea Gustav with views of the plains of Campania.

Traces of History in the Landscape and Town

On the slope crossed by Via Serra, you can see quarries that were already in operation in Roman times. The Perlato Royal Coreno limestone also has a long history of use. In Roman times, it was used, among other things, for the Via Appia, the Via Ercolanea, columns and streets in Pompeii, and the amphitheatre of the Roman city of Minturnae. The stone was also used for the Abbey of Montecassino.

The history of the Gustav Line is marked by a specific date at Monte Maio: a national flag on the summit commemorates its capture by French troops on 13 May 1944, following the breakthrough of the Gustav Line’s main front. Another memorial site is the Monumento per la Pace di Marinaranne. It was inaugurated on 15 May 1994 between Monte Faito and Monte Feuci, at the foot of Monte Maio on the road to Vallauria.

Every year on the third Sunday in May, the Marcia della Pace runs from Coreno Ausonio’s central square to Marinaranne. The programme includes guided tours along the routes of the Gustav Line. If you are planning your trip around this event, check the dates in advance. This annual walk links the route to the memorial site with visits to historic trails.

Caves, the Ecomuseum and Regional Cuisine

The Grotta delle Fate is located on Monte Schiavone. This unusual natural cave is carved into the rock and worked with a chisel; cultivated terraces with two wells lie below its entrance. The Grotta delle Fate in Contrada Selva di Palma is considered to be a tomb carved into the rock around the 8th century BC. Large boulders currently block the entrance, so the cave is inaccessible. Check its access status again before your trip.

The Eco Royal Museum is a multifunctional ecomuseum that brings together the town and art in a walking tour. The Church of Santa Margherita is also part of the town’s architectural history: it was built towards the end of the 14th century. Together with the quarries and Perlato Royal Coreno, these examples offer different insights into the history of Coreno Ausonio—from the use of stone to art and religious architecture.

Local cuisine includes laina e fasuri, a traditional first course. The dough is made from flour and water and served with beans, chickpeas or grass peas. Alongside the landscape and historical themes you can explore during your trip, this dish offers a culinary connection to the region.
