Giuliano di Roma: Culture and Volcanic History
Accommodation in Giuliano Di Roma
Giuliano di Roma is a suitable destination for anyone interested in volcanism and local history. Geological landscape features, churches and local customs offer different points of interest for planning a trip. The pedestrian area in the historic centre and the narrow, uphill lanes also help visitors find their way around.
Volcanic history and geology
The hill on which Giuliano di Roma stands was the summit of a significant eruptive centre. It is one of the 20 eruptive centres in the central Valle Latina. Today, the hill is an inactive volcanic summit. Giuliano di Roma overlooks the Valle dell’Amaseno; its volcanic history is also evident at several named geological sites.
Pleistocene pyroclastic deposits can be found in the Valle del Fosso di Monte Acuto in Giuliano di Roma. Their components include pumice, scoria, lapilli and fragments of lava. The different materials offer a concrete insight into the composition of this geological area. A lava flow associated with the effusive activity of the Giuliano di Roma eruptive centre in the Hernican volcanic area is exposed at Valcatora. The Monte Siserno geological landscape area has the ZPS IT6030043 “Monti Lepini” as its associated protected area.
The MUVE – Museo del Vulcanismo Ernico is located in Palazzo Brettagna, in the heart of the historic centre. It extends over three floors. The route takes visitors through various themed areas and provides information about volcanism and geology. The museum thus complements the geological landscape features with its own thematic perspective.
Churches and historic buildings
The Collegiata Santa Maria Maggiore is an 18th-century Baroque church and has held the title “Collegiata Insigne” since 1737. Its detached bell tower is 30 metres high and was originally the keep of Castello Colonna. The church also has an 18th-century wooden choir, which is currently awaiting restoration. Its title, tower and choir furnishings point to different aspects of the building’s history.
The Santuario Madonna della Speranza was built in the second half of the 18th century and consecrated in 1762 by the Bishop of Ferentino. The image of the Madonna della Speranza dates from the 16th century. A bomb that failed to explode in May 1944 is kept in the sanctuary’s presbytery. These details link the history of the sanctuary to different centuries and, in the case of the bomb, to wartime.
A plaque at the Chiesa di San Biagio records an initial restoration in 1091. The church’s only surviving fresco dates from the 1692 decoration and depicts the martyr San Sosio. The Chiesa di San Rocco stands in the centre of Borgo Vittorio Emanuele and was originally dedicated to San Sebastiano. Work on the church was completed in August 1863; it was subsequently consecrated again. The Fontana del Fauno, a bronze fountain, also stands in the centre of the piazza in Borgo Vittorio Emanuele.
Local routes, traditions and cuisine
The historic centre is a pedestrian area reached by narrow lanes that climb uphill. Those interested in a longer route can also follow the Cammino della Regina Camilla in Giuliano di Roma: the approximately 185-kilometre circular route passes through the town and follows old transhumance routes, mule tracks, historic paths and pilgrimage routes. For specific route planning, it is advisable to check the official project information, as route details may change.
San Biagio is celebrated on 3 February and in August with processions. During the festival, San Biagio oil is blessed; the priest then anoints the throats of the faithful with it. A very old statue of San Biagio is carried in a procession from the Chiesa di San Biagio on the last Saturday in August. Today, it is kept in the sacristy of Santa Maria Maggiore. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival date, check the programme for the relevant year in advance.
A local speciality is “Maccaruni cugli feri”: hollow spaghetti shaped using an “iron”. The traditional Sagra dei “Maccaruni Cugli Feri” is a festival celebrating this typical dish. If you would like to include it in your travel plans, check the programme for the relevant year.
