Amaseno: Culture and History
Accommodation in Amaseno
Historic Center and Townscape
The historic center of Amaseno is enclosed by walls with towers and five gates; within these fortifications lies a network of narrow streets. The ring of walls and the street network give the townscape two distinct scales: an enclosing structure and small-scale routes through the center. Together, they make the town’s historic character spatially tangible. To understand Amaseno, it is therefore important to consider not only individual buildings but also the relationship between the walled center and its narrow streets.
Buildings from Different Periods
The Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta is a national monument and was built by Cistercians at the end of the 12th century. A different event is central to the Castello dei De Ceccano: the Counts De Ceccano fortified it in 1200. Also in 1200, Cistercians built the Santuario Madonna dell’Auricola on the hill of the same name. The dates therefore do not refer to the same thing in every case: for the Collegiata and the Santuario, they refer to construction; for the Castello, to fortification. This distinction helps place these three historical landmarks in context without treating their building histories as identical.
Bridge and Nativity Scene
In the hamlet of Selvina stands the Ponte Sant’Aneglio, a round-arched bridge dating from 314 BC. It once connected the abbeys of Fossanova and Valvisciolo. This means that one period in the town’s history reaches far back beyond the medieval buildings mentioned above. The Chiesa dell’Annunziata also houses a movable, animated nativity scene. The bridge and the nativity scene offer different cultural points of interest: one is an ancient structure with a former connecting function; the other, a religious display in a church.
Religious Traditions Throughout the Year and Day
Every year on August 10, the ritual of the miraculous liquefaction of the blood of Saint Lawrence is repeated in Amaseno. The fixed date gives the tradition a clear annual rhythm. The prayers at the Chiesa Madonna delle Grazie follow a different pattern: during the month of May, the rosary is recited there every afternoon. The two religious traditions therefore follow different time patterns—a single recurring date and daily prayers throughout a month.
Landscape and Cuisine
The mountain areas of Amaseno include smaller valleys at elevations of around 700 to 1,090 meters. This approximate range of about 390 meters makes the variation within the landscape tangible. Traditional Amaseno cuisine includes dishes made with Bufaletto meat, among other things. The mountain landscape and local food thus complement the town’s historical and religious themes with further facets.
Access and Getting There
The restoration of Santa Maria dell’Auricola was reported as completed in February 2026. The work included a new external ramp providing access for people with disabilities.
