Discover Veroli: Old Town, Archaeology and Prato di Campoli
Accommodation in Veroli
Veroli brings together archaeological remains and medieval city gates, religious buildings and CAI routes in the mountains. For planning your trip, it is therefore useful to consider two different focuses: the historic town and the trails around Prato di Campoli. Which stops interest you depends on whether you are mainly drawn to Veroli’s history or would rather explore the landscape and hiking routes.
Archaeology and historic buildings
At the Museo Civico Archeologico in the Palazzo Municipale, you can see a section of a polygonal wall dating from the 4th century BC. It belonged to the forum of the Roman town. A reproduction of the Fasti Verulani is also on display in the museum. The two exhibits offer different insights: the wall comes from the architectural setting of the forum, while the Fasti Verulani reproduction is one of the museum’s other exhibits.
Another institution is the Museo Archeologico Nazionale “Amedeo Maiuri”. The exhibition “Ancient Italic Peoples: the Hernici, the Volsci and the others” is shown there in nine rooms on the ground floor of Palazzo Marchesi Campanari. The two museums are easy to distinguish: the Museo Civico Archeologico is in the Palazzo Municipale; the exhibition mentioned above belongs to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Palazzo Marchesi Campanari.
Palazzo Marchesi Campanari is in the historic center and was built by the Campanari family, who have lived in Veroli since 1324. The palazzo contains a monumental reception hall with a Murano glass chandelier. Together with the exhibitions, the building thus brings together local history and craftsmanship, without confusing the two museums.
The city gates also display different historic features. Porta Santa Croce has retained its medieval appearance. Porta Napoletana, by contrast, is a monumental 18th-century gate on the eastern side of Veroli. These are two clearly distinct examples for anyone interested in historic architecture.
Old town, churches and religious tradition
Veroli’s old town is divided into three areas. In the Quartiere San Leucio stands the city’s oldest church: a small place of worship dedicated to the saint since the 11th century. The Cathedral of Sant’Andrea was built on the site of the temple of ancient Verulae. This building history connects the present-day church with the ancient settlement, while the small church in Quartiere San Leucio represents a different chapter in religious history.
The Scala Santa is located inside the Basilica di Santa Maria Salome. Its twelve steps are made of local stone and may be climbed only on one’s knees. If you include this site in your visit, this religious practice is one of the specific conditions of the visit.
Another event with religious and local character is the Sagra della Crespella. It is celebrated in the hamlet of Santa Francesca in the foothills of Veroli around March 10. Since the date is set separately for each travel year, check the event dates before making plans.
CAI routes and landscape around Prato di Campoli
The hiking trails also offer different points of interest. Section O02 of the Sentiero Italia CAI reaches Prato di Campoli, in the municipality of Veroli, at an altitude of about 1,100 meters. The route alternates between woodland and flat meadows; it also passes characteristic stone shepherds’ huts. CAI trail 621 follows the same route as this section of the Sentiero Italia.
Section O03 of the Sentiero Italia CAI starts at Rifugio Prato di Campoli and climbs through dense woodland. The landscape descriptions therefore differ: O02 is characterized by the alternation of woodland and flat meadows, as well as the stone shepherds’ huts, while O03 is described as a wooded ascent.
Another route description concerns the CAI Roma trail to Pizzo Deta. Published on June 6, 2026, the description passes through Prato di Campoli at an altitude of 1,140 meters and mentions a parking area there. Trail conditions may vary. So check the latest information before setting out.
Which interests suit your trip?
If you would like to focus on archaeological collections, historic architecture and religious buildings, Veroli offers several clearly distinct places to visit: the two archaeological museums, the city gates, the churches and Palazzo Marchesi Campanari. If, on the other hand, you are planning time for a CAI route, the different descriptions of O02 and O03 can help you picture the landscape features of each. You can check route information and event dates for your travel period before planning.
