Villa Santa Lucia – Landscape and History at Monte Cairo
Accommodation in Villa Santa Lucia
Villa Santa Lucia can be explored from two perspectives: the landscape around Monte Cairo and traces of the town’s history. The municipal area lies in the lower Liri Valley, on the southern slope of Monte Cairo. When looking for a hotel for your stay, you can consider whether mountain scenery, archaeological evidence, religious history and local craft traditions match the subjects that interest you.
Historical Traces in Piumarola
The remains of its castle have been preserved in the hamlet of Piumarola, along with archaeological remains from Roman times. Some finds from unsystematic excavations in the area, particularly in the Piumarola area, have been visibly set into the walls of public and private buildings. This means archaeological traces can also be encountered in building walls. Anyone interested in the material history of the town can distinguish the castle remains as architectural traces from the Roman finds as archaeological evidence.
Another historical perspective is offered by the tabula nundinalis, which is kept at the Museo di Napoli. It records the holidays on which the Romans held public markets and fairs for the exchange of goods, and names Piumarola as an important craft and commercial centre. Alongside archaeological remains, the tablet thus points to Piumarola’s importance in crafts and trade.
The Sanctuary and Paths of Remembrance
In 1595, the complex comprising the Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie and the Convento di Sant'Angelo in Fortunula was founded in Villa Santa Lucia. This landmark adds another historical layer to the Roman traces in Piumarola: the founding of the religious complex in 1595.
The paths of remembrance tourism climb the mountain, pass around the Castello di Sant'Angelo da Fortunula and extend as far as the Abbey of Montecassino. The Castello is a few kilometres from the Santuario di Maria SS. delle Grazie. Some residents organise excursions along these paths and can share the history of the battles of the Second World War. If you are planning such an excursion, check availability in advance.
The Craft of Strammaro
Strammaro is also part of the local craft tradition. It involves using dried stramma to make baskets, mats and chairs. The material and the products give this subject its own character: the focus here is a craft practice, not a single monument. If you are interested in traditional production, Strammaro offers a tangible insight into local crafts.
Getting to Villa Santa Lucia
One route takes the A1 (Milan–Naples) to the Cassino exit. From there, head towards the centre of Cassino on the S.S. 6 Casilina in the direction of Frosinone; then take the turn-off for Villa Santa Lucia. The directions therefore break down into three steps: the motorway exit, continuing along the Casilina and turning off towards your destination. Before setting off, check your navigation against this sequence.
