Fontechiari
Accommodation in Fontechiari
Fontechiari offers several tangible points of interest for travelers interested in local history, sacred art, and historic architectural styles. The historic center sits on a rocky outcrop above the valley; churches, the Eremo di Sant’Onofrio, and the Cimitero Napoleonico offer different insights into architectural history, art, and historical uses. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Fontechiari, these topics can help you connect your cultural interests with your choice of destination.
Landscape and Townscape
The Rio di Fontechiari flows through the area of Fontechiari and joins the Fibreno River at Ponte Tapino. The location of the historic center offers a different perspective on the town: it sits on a rocky outcrop above the valley. These two features describe different scales—the course of a river through the area and the elevated position of the town center.
Churches and Sacred Art
The earliest records of the Chiesa dei SS. Giovanni Battista ed Evangelista date from 1308–1310. Its architecture can be described in terms of specific features: the Baroque church has a rectangular floor plan, three naves, six columns, and eight arches. The number of naves describes the interior layout; the columns and arches add further architectural elements.
The church’s furnishings include an organ built by Cesare Catarinozzi in 1785. The church thus brings together various historical reference points: early records from the early 14th century and a precisely dated instrument from the late 18th century. The dates refer to different aspects and do not indicate when the church was built.
The painting of the Madonna dei Fratelli in the Santuario della Madonna dei Fratelli dates from the 17th century and is attributed to an unknown painter from Lazio.
Cemetery and Hermitage
The Cimitero Napoleonico was established in 1838 in the locality of S. Onofrio in accordance with the Edict of Saint-Cloud, proclaimed by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806. The two dates mark the edict and, more than three decades later, the establishment of the cemetery. The structure is made of brick; its layout features concentric circles and areas separated by rank. In central Italy, the Cimitero Napoleonico is considered the only known example of a Napoleonic cemetery.
The Eremo di Sant’Onofrio consists of a long cave divided into three rooms. The hermitage also features exterior paintings depicting saints and sacred symbols, dated to 1517–1520. Two different features stand out here: the layout of the cave interior and the paintings on the exterior, which are dated to a specific period.
Travel History and Events
Historically, travelers could wait at the Ospitale if they arrived after the village gates had closed and were initially unable to enter.
Events are also among Fontechiari’s cultural offerings. On October 20, 2024, the Festa dell’Autunno con la Maxitorta reached its 19th edition. The “Fontechiari: Tradizione e Storia Contadina” festival has held more than fifteen editions. If an event date is important to your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance.
