Discover Cervaro: History, Art and Landscape
Accommodation in Cervaro
If you are looking for a hotel in Cervaro, you can plan your trip around your interests. The town’s historical themes include defensive architecture, religious art and the history of goldworking. Vineyards, olive groves and the landscape around Monte Aquilone add to this cultural focus. You can decide in advance whether architectural history, religious art, craftsmanship or the surrounding area is your priority.
Castle and Local History
The Castello di Trocchio is considered the most tangible historical record of the Cervaro area. Today it is largely a ruin, but impressive remains have survived. These include a central square tower that formed the core of the defensive system. In the early Middle Ages, the Abbot of Montecassino had a defensive castle built to protect Cervaro, naming it Castrum Cerbari. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore in Cervaro is dated to around the year 1000.
The Santuario della Madonna de’ Piternis
The Santuario della Madonna de’ Piternis stands at the entrance to a gorge at the foot of Monte Aquilone, on the provincial road from Cervaro to Viticuso. The sanctuary church was built from 1399 onward around a small niche dating from before the year 1000. The niche is associated with the reported apparition of the Madonna to a sick girl from Cervaro.
The Santuario preserves frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries. These include a 15th-century Christ Pantocrator and a Madonna del Latte. Here, the history of the building and the history of its art are closely connected with the religious tradition surrounding the niche.
Goldsmithing and the Abbey
The Museo dell’Arte Orafa focuses on Cervaro’s former goldworking industry. In the first decades of the 20th century, there were 30 goldsmith workshops there. The museum features machines, moulds and equipment used for goldworking, as well as jewellery made in Cervaro from the late 17th to the 20th century. The reconstructed workshop illustrates the different stages of goldworking.
The Museo dell’Abazia is housed in the rooms of an abbey founded by Benedict of Nursia in the 6th century. Its collection includes gold and silverwork, illuminated missals and paintings by renowned artists. Cervaro thus brings together two distinct aspects of its cultural heritage: the craftsmanship of goldworking and the abbey’s art treasures. If you are interested in visiting a museum, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.
Landscape and Local Cuisine
From a rocky rise on the mountain of the same name, Cervaro overlooks the Cassino plain. The sunny slopes of Monte Aquilone are home to vineyards and olive groves. The Prenestina-Casilina branch of the Via Francigena del Sud also passes through Cervaro. These landscape and route connections complement the historical themes, without suggesting a particular sightseeing itinerary.
Local Ciociarian cuisine includes extra virgin olive oil from Cervaro, Malvasia wine and fresh tagliolini. The tradition of the Infiorata del Corpus Domini dates back to 1949; Cervaro’s cultural programme also includes a living Stations of the Cross procession on Good Friday. When planning your trip, you can choose between different themes: history and religious art, goldsmithing or the landscape and regional cuisine.
