Discover Atina
Accommodation in Atina
Atina occupies a commanding position above the Melfa Valley. If you are looking for a hotel in Atina, you can choose the town based on several specific interests: the Museo archeologico di Atina e della Valle di Comino Giuseppe Visocchi is located in the historic centre; the Palazzo Ducale Cantelmo combines a distinctive building history with striking architectural details. The wine designations “Atina” and the town’s historical connection to winegrowing are also among the features that define Atina as a destination.
Museums and archaeological evidence
The Museo archeologico di Atina e della Valle di Comino Giuseppe Visocchi (MAVAC) is located on the first floor of an elegant Neoclassical-style building in Atina’s historic centre. The reference to the first floor adds a specific landmark to the museum’s location in the centre. The Neoclassical building also provides the museum’s architectural setting.
The Museo Civico Archeologico houses a lapidarium containing valuable Roman inscriptions from the municipal area of Atina. A lapidarium brings together stone artefacts; here, the local connection lies in the origin of the inscriptions. They therefore offer a different perspective from the Palazzo’s building history: the focus is on Roman written records.
The Palazzo Ducale Cantelmo
The Palazzo Ducale Cantelmo was built on the site previously occupied by the fortress of the d’Aquino family. Its building history can be read as a sequence at the same location: the Palazzo followed the fortress on this site. The former fortress and the later Palazzo are thus part of the history of the place.
The Palazzo features lateral towers, bifora windows and rose windows with funnel-shaped openings. Bifora windows are divided into two openings; rose windows are round, rose-shaped windows whose openings are widened here in a funnel shape.
The grand hall of the Palazzo Ducale Cantelmo contains a Roman black-and-white mosaic. It depicts a Samnite warrior in four attacking poses. The Roman mosaic and the Samnite figure come together in a single work; the four attacking poses define the specific subject of the image.
Atina’s wine designations and history of winegrowing
The protected designation of origin “Atina” is reserved for the wines Atina rosso, Atina rosso riserva, Atina Cabernet, Atina Cabernet riserva and Atina Semillon. Both Rosso and Cabernet also come in a Riserva version, while Semillon is an additional designation. The names provide an overview of the different wines sold under the Atina designation.
Cabernet and Syrah vines were first planted in Atina in 1860 by Pasquale Visocchi. The date adds a historical perspective to the wine designations: it identifies two grape varieties, one person and a specific year. Together, the wines mentioned and the dated planting offer two different perspectives on Atina’s connection to wine.
