The Castello di Gorizia retains the appearance of a fortress to this day. Museums focus on the First World War, fashion and archaeology; parks offer, among other things, paths leading to memorials and a nature trail. The border with Nova Gorica and a cross-border connection also help shape how visitors find their way around. When planning your trip, you can focus on cultural history, collections or green spaces.

Getting around the city

Gorizia's urban transport network includes seven daytime routes, one night route and a cross-border connection to Nova Gorica in Slovenia. All routes pass through the intermodal passenger centre at the railway station. The station is therefore a shared reference point across the network.

Line 1 is the main route in the urban transport network. It runs every 12 to 15 minutes and serves major sights in the city. Check the latest information on routes and frequency before travelling, as service details may change. At Stazione della Transalpina, the border between Gorizia and Nova Gorica runs through the station; it offers a tangible geographical reference point for both cities.

The castle and its collections

The fortress-like appearance of the Castello di Gorizia makes it one of the city's cultural attractions. The castle also houses the distributed exhibition Theatrum Instrumentorum. This brings together the building's historic character and a dedicated exhibition theme.

The Museo della Grande Guerra presents photographs, weapons, medals and other accounts of life in the trenches of Gorizia during the First World War. The museum includes a full-scale reconstructed trench system that visitors can walk through. Check the current access arrangements before your visit.

At the Museo della Moda e delle Arti Applicate, you can see clothing and accessories from the 18th to the 20th century. The Collezione Archeologica covers a different period: it displays finds from Gorizia and nearby areas, dating from the late Palaeolithic through to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The collections therefore range from fashion and applied arts to archaeological finds from distant eras.

Historic sites and Villa Coronini Cronberg

The Sinagoga Ebraica was built in 1756 and stands in the centre of the former Jewish ghetto. Another historic point of interest is the museum tour at Fondazione Palazzo Coronini Cronberg. It leads through fifteen rooms, including the room where Charles X of Bourbon, the last king of France, died in 1836.

Villa Coronini Cronberg, its outbuildings and its park are open to visitors. Check the current opening arrangements for the villa, its outbuildings and the park before your visit. Parco di villa Coronini Cronberg was created towards the end of the 19th century as part of an urban improvement programme intended to establish Gorizia's identity as a garden city.

Memorial sites and green spaces

Each stop on the Map of Memories has an information totem. It briefly explains the context and provides access to multimedia content via a QR code. Digital content may be updated.

Parco della Rimembranza di Gorizia has several shaded paths leading to its memorials. Parco urbano del Castello has a comfortable unpaved path, a large sunny recreation area, and several benches and tables. The parks therefore have distinct features: shaded paths to monuments in one, and a sunny place to relax with seating and tables in the other.

Parco di Piuma Isonzo has an informative nature trail. It adds a nature-focused option to the parks, alongside the paths to memorials in Parco della Rimembranza and the sunny recreation area in Parco urbano del Castello.

Culinary tradition

Gorizia's culinary tradition reflects the coexistence of Latin, Germanic and Slavic cultures that developed over centuries. It is another aspect of the city's culture.
