Ronchi Dei Legionari: In the Footsteps of the Romans
Accommodation in Ronchi Dei Legionari
Ronchi Dei Legionari offers visitors a strong focus on archaeological and historical sites. Two places illustrate different approaches to the Roman past: the Villa romana di Ronchi dei Legionari, an archaeological complex, and the Antiquarium comunale di Ronchi dei Legionari, which houses finds from the Roman settlement. The villa lies in a rural setting west of the town and near Friuli Venezia Giulia Airport; the antiquarium is in the town centre. Ronchi Dei Legionari lies on the slopes of the Karst and is home to a regional airport.
The Roman Villa and Its Mosaics
The Villa romana di Ronchi dei Legionari was a residential and production settlement. It was established around the middle of the 1st century BC and remained in use, with various changes, until the 3rd century AD. A fire led to its final abandonment. Its long period of use and eventual abandonment by fire give the site a clearly defined history: this is not just a single building, but a settlement whose use changed over several centuries.
A visitor route with a walkway and information panels runs through the building complex, which visitors can explore along this route. Mosaic floors are still visible in the villa. They are either polychrome or decorated in black-and-white geometric patterns, with marble inlays. Here, you can encounter different patterns and styles in the same place; the mosaics also remain part of the archaeological context in which they were found.
Finds at the Antiquarium, History in the Town Centre
The Antiquarium comunale di Ronchi dei Legionari opened in 2012. It is housed in a purposefully renovated hay barn belonging to an 18th-century manor villa in the town centre. The exhibition features mosaics, coins, pottery, glass, metal objects and building materials from the Roman settlement. While the villa lets visitors experience the archaeological site itself, the antiquarium brings together different categories of objects from this settlement. If you are interested in the Roman past, these offer complementary perspectives: one on the complex and the other on the objects found there.
Other historic buildings point to different periods. The Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire was enlarged and completely renovated in 1645. Palazzo Giraldi-Fabris is the oldest surviving Venetian palace in Ronchi dei Legionari. Count Antonio Giraldi had it built at the end of the 17th century where old roads converged; it is owned by the Fabris family. Its date of construction and location make it a different point of reference in the town’s history from the Roman remains.
Villa Blasig also offers its own distinctive imagery: inside are a floor mosaic depicting Jesus and two wall panels showing Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. These religious motifs differ clearly from the geometric and polychrome mosaics of the Roman villa, broadening the perspective on the town’s artistic and architectural history.
Karst Landscape and Hiking Route
Ronchi Dei Legionari lies on the slopes of the Karst. A hiking route runs along the Cavea, an ancient amphitheatre now used as a skatepark, and reaches Androna Palmada, the oldest hamlet in Ronchi dei Legionari. At the Cavea, an ancient structure and its present-day use meet; Androna Palmada offers another local history reference at the end of the route described here. The route complements a visit to the villa and antiquarium with a different perspective on the town, without assuming any particular pace or walking time.
