If you are looking for a hotel in Farra d'Isonzo, you can begin by choosing according to the subjects that interest you during your trip: rural history, Roman traces, Monte Fortin or cycling. The historic sites differ in period and character: one museum is dedicated to rural life, Mainizza to archaeological interpretations, and Monte Fortin to military installations and views.

Rural Life and Ecclesiastical History

The Museo di Documentazione della Civiltà contadina di Farra d'Isonzo opened to the public in 1993. It presents different rooms and social aspects of rural life. The rooms and social relationships provide two ways into the subject: they focus both on how living spaces were arranged and on the society associated with them.

Another perspective is offered by the Museo di documentazione della civiltà contadina friulana in Colmello di Grotta. It was established in the former settlement of the Strassoldo family. Towards the end of the 18th century, the settlement had been built as a place of residence and work for around ten families bound to the family by colonato contracts. The focus here is therefore the history of a specific settlement and workplace. The Chiesetta di borgo Zuppini adds another point of interest: it is considered the oldest church in the archdiocese dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.

Mainizza and the Roman Past

In Mainizza, remains of a Roman settlement lie beside the historic Isonzo Bridge, known as the Pons Sontis. Mainizza's growth during Roman times was connected with an important route that started in Aquileia. The settlement is interpreted as a Roman mansio; it probably included a guard post, a customs station and a rest stop for travellers and merchants. This interpretation thus links the site to travel and transport in the Roman context.

The foundations of a rectangular building are also part of this archaeological picture. They were uncovered during excavations in the 1930s and interpreted as a Roman bath complex. This interpretation includes a frigidarium, a tepidarium and a calidarium—a cold, warm and hot bath. The proposed function adds another aspect of life at the time to the interpretation of Mainizza as a settlement and rest stop.

Monte Fortin: Tunnels, Views and a Cycling Route

The complex of gun emplacements at Monte Fortin consists of two access tunnels linked by a main tunnel running from north to south. Several gun positions lie along the main tunnel; one is now sealed off. Three positions each were oriented towards Gorizia, the confluence of the Vipacco and the Isonzo, and Monte San Michele. This precise orientation sets the complex apart from a simple description of the landscape.

Monte Fortin offers sweeping views over the Collio hills and their internationally renowned vineyards. The view extends towards Gorizia, about eight kilometres away, as well as Monte Sabotino, Monte Calvario, Monte San Michele and the heights of the Karst. If you would also like to plan a circular cycling route, the Anelli del fiume Isonzo (R062) passes through Farra d'Isonzo. Check the latest route details with the publisher before setting out on a bike ride.

Winegrowing in Two DOC Areas

Tenuta Borgo Conventi has 30 hectares of vineyards: 20 hectares are in the renowned hills of the DOC Collio, and a further 10 hectares are in the alluvial plain of the DOC Isonzo. The winery produces Friulian white and red wines.

For planning your trip, these offer a range of thematic focuses: rural society and settlement history, Roman transport routes and baths, military remains and landscapes, and winegrowing.
