Two themes stand out for planning a trip to Pieris: cycling on the named routes and local history. The routes follow different paths; Villa Settimini, the wine trade and Coppa Vetturino offer historical perspectives. If you are looking for a hotel in Pieris, these interests can shape the focus of your stay.

Cycling on the FVG2/d and I5 routes

The FVG2/d Variante dell’aeroporto cycling route can be ridden on any bicycle, including one without gears. It is almost entirely flat and follows paved roads shared with other traffic, so particular care is needed. Two points should be kept distinct when planning: the largely flat profile describes the route, while sharing the road describes the traffic conditions. Check the current route before setting out and take road traffic into account.

The route passes through Turriaco and Pieris to Fiumicello, then continues towards Aquileia. Route I5 connects Pieris and San Canzian with the Parco dell’Isonzo. The Parco dell’Isonzo is one of the most striking sections of the I5.

There are therefore two different points of reference for comparison: the FVG2/d is characterised by its named sequence of towns and its road layout, while the central reference point for the I5 is its connection between Pieris and San Canzian and the Parco dell’Isonzo. You can use the desired route direction and landscape as a guide to your choice.

Architectural history and culinary heritage

Villa Settimini was built in the final years of the 18th century by Giobatta, the last member of the Settimini family. It forms an early chapter in local history, which also encompasses trade and food culture.

In the 1850s, Antonio Cosolo and his wife Gisella opened a wine business in his parents’ home in Pieris. The fact that the business began in the family home and that both spouses were involved links this episode to the Cosolo family history.

In 1939, Mario Cosolo returned to Pieris and named his dessert Coppa Vetturino. The timeline thus runs from the villa’s construction, through the wine business of the 1850s, to the naming of the dessert in 1939. Architectural history, trade and culinary heritage stand alongside one another as distinct chapters.

Archaeological collection in San Canzian d’Isonzo

San Canzian d’Isonzo offers a separate archaeological point of interest: the Antiquarium Cantianense preserves excavation finds, funerary inscriptions and remains of an early Christian basilica dating from the 4th to the 6th century. This period refers to the basilica and adds archaeological evidence to the themes of architectural history and culinary heritage.

The locations remain clearly distinct: Villa Settimini and the Cosolo episodes belong to the history of Pieris, while the Antiquarium is located in San Canzian d’Isonzo. If you are interested in cultural history, you can take these different focuses into account when planning your trip.
