Verghereto: Landscapes, Trails and Cultural History
Accommodation in Verghereto
Verghereto brings together striking landscapes, cultural history and outdoor activities. Elevations in the area range from around 500 metres near the River Para to 1,400 metres at Monte Fumaiolo. The source of the Tiber is also located there, at 1,407 metres.
Landscapes between Monte Fumaiolo and Alfero
The Balze di Verghereto, Monte Fumaiolo, Ripa della Moia Natura 2000 site encompasses the wooded northern slopes of Monte Fumaiolo, from Alferello to Sant’Alberico. Another striking feature of the landscape is the Cascata dell’Alferello, also known as Cascata delle Trote: the 32-metre-high waterfall lies just outside Alfero.
Summer activities and routes
In summer, you can explore Verghereto on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. Also in summer, the Rupe della Moia cliff at Monte Fumaiolo is used for free climbing.
Less experienced cyclists are advised to turn back at the Eremo di Sant’Alberico on the MTB route and return to the car park along around three kilometres of paved road. The approximate return distance and road surface are therefore part of this specific recommendation.
Another route detail concerns the path from the Eremo di Sant’Alberico to Balze: it includes an uphill, approximately 800-metre-long mule track with rocky, uneven terrain. While the paved return route is the key consideration in the MTB recommendation, the length, incline and ground conditions are important planning details for this section of the path. Route conditions may change; check the latest information before setting out.
The tourist description of the Stazione Sciistica Fumaiolo-Balze, updated in July 2024, mentions a ski lift serving three red runs. If you are planning your trip around this offering, check the current situation in advance.
Cultural history and events
Traces of the old walls and castle gate can still be seen in Verghereto’s town centre. The Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo in Verghereto was founded in 987 at the behest of San Romualdo. In 1371, a landslide caused part of the Monastery of San Michele to collapse; it was subsequently rebuilt outside Verghereto’s walls.
The Eremo di Sant’Alberico lies at an elevation of 1,147 metres in a deep gorge, halfway between Balze and the Monastery of the Celle. Tavolicci is also home to the Museo storico Casa dell’Eccidio di Tavolicci. These places represent different aspects of the cultural history of Verghereto and its surroundings.
One fixed date to keep in mind when planning your trip is 15 August: the Palio della Bigoncia, a traditional costume contest, is held every year in Balze on that day.
Regional products
Tortelli alla lastra is a traditional product of the Verghereto area. The Pera cocomerina from Ville di Montecoronaro is recognised as a Slow Food Presidio. Anyone interested in regional food culture will find concrete points of reference in these two names: a local tradition and a named product with a special distinction.
