Premilcuore: Trails, Nature and Architectural History
Accommodation in Premilcuore
Premilcuore combines nature and hiking with a townscape shaped by the Middle Ages. With a substantial and valuable part of its territory, Premilcuore contributes to the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna. The trails in the national park can be explored on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. This gives you a choice of different ways to get outdoors as you plan your trip, while the historic townscape offers a focus of its own.
Hiking and nature in the national park
One specific hike is the Passeggiata al Gorgolaio. The route is 5 km long and starts in town; along the way, you can see the Cascata della Sega near Agriturismo Ridolla and the Grotta Urlante. Assess river crossings and trail conditions before setting out. This lets you include this particular hike and its named natural landmarks in your travel plans.
At the Grotta Urlante in the Parco Nazionale, the Rabbi River forms a waterfall with a powerful, striking sound. Beneath a 17th-century stone bridge, it creates two pools. The waterfall, its sound and the pools define this natural landmark. If you want to experience different aspects of a landscape, this combination offers an audible impression as well as a view of the water.
Check trails before setting out
Before setting out, check current conditions and whether the trails in the national park are actually passable. One specific notice concerns Sentiero 323 between Premilcuore and Strada Valbura/Bucine: a landslide at Piansegni is making passage difficult. If you are planning to take this particular trail, take the notice into account and check the current situation in advance. This is a different planning consideration from choosing between the modes of transport mentioned for the park.
Medieval town center and architectural history
The walled village of Premilcuore preserves an almost intact medieval town center. One striking building is Porta Fiorentina, also known as Torre dell’Orologio. It was built as a tower-like gateway to the castle of Premilcuore and is in the Tuscan style of the 13th or 14th century. Including its battlements, it is about 21 meters tall. Its function, style and scale offer different clues for understanding the building’s history.
Two dates should be distinguished for the Pieve di San Martino in Alpe: its existence is documented from at least the 10th or 11th century, while its present structure dates from the second half of the 16th century. The early dates therefore refer to the documented existence of the Pieve, not to the building’s present form. Another trace of history can be found at Mulino Mengozzi in Fiumicello, where ancient millstones that are still fully operational have been preserved.
Nature interpretation at the visitor center
Premilcuore’s visitor center includes an educational workshop with games and activities for children. The Fauna Room introduces the animals living in the protected area through panels and monitors. The center therefore focuses on both activities and information about local wildlife. If you are planning a visit, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.
