Santa Sofia lies in the Bidente Valley, in the heart of the Parco delle Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna. Several themes may shape your trip planning: multi-day hiking, forests and nature conservation, outdoor art, as well as regional festivals and cuisine. If you are looking for a hotel in Santa Sofia, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay. Would you mainly like to hike, combine forest themes and art, or plan a trip around an event? These different focuses give your trip planning a clear direction.

Hiking and Protected Nature

Route 2 of the “Da rifugio a rifugio” project is a three-day hike across ridges, beech forests and unspoiled landscapes. The project links three-day circular hikes with two overnight stays at accommodation for hikers. The Sentiero Natura Campigna passes through the Fosso Abetio, an old reforestation area with silver firs. This gives you a clear distinction for planning your trip: the route includes a set duration and two overnight stays, while the Sentiero focuses on Fosso Abetio and its silver fir reforestation as a specific landscape theme.

The strictly protected Sasso Fratino Integral Nature Reserve covers almost 800 hectares. Access is restricted to study purposes with proven justification. Keep this access restriction in mind if nature and hiking are central to your trip planning.

Forest Themes and Interpretation

The forest is the focus at the Centro Visita di Santa Sofia. Its features include the “L’Armadio dei Suoni e dei Segni” learning installation and a floor for temporary exhibitions. The Museo della Fauna e dei Sensi complements the nature theme with an educational workshop that uses games and environmental education activities. Forest themes are therefore explored not only along hiking trails, but also through learning and exhibition settings.

Sculptures and Art

The open-air sculpture park runs from the centre of Santa Sofia through the bed of the Bidente River to Capaccio. “Santa Sofia ’93” by artist Mauro Staccioli is the first work in the sculpture park. It was created in 1993 for the 37th edition of the Premio Campigna. The Premio Campigna itself takes place every year in the autumn months and is dedicated to local and national contemporary art. The outdoor trail is thus linked to an art event that returns each autumn.

Festivals and Regional Cuisine

The “Di strada in strada” festival takes place at Ferragosto and features street performances by artists from around the world. One culinary speciality of the upper Bidente Valley is Tortello alla lastra, filled with pumpkin and potatoes. It is celebrated each year at the end of September at a festival of the same name. The dates bring different seasonal highlights: Ferragosto for the street festival, the autumn months for the Premio Campigna, and late September for the Tortello festival.
