In Simontornya, architectural history and local history go hand in hand. Simontornyai Vár combines a preserved Renaissance ensemble with exhibitions on different periods and themes. The Local History House offers another perspective on the town’s past. When planning your trip, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between two interests: are you primarily interested in architecture and castle collections, or in local history surrounding the Fried family and leather production?

Simontornyai Vár: Renaissance and Early History

Simontornyai Vár is listed as a national monument. The gate tower, old tower and staircase form a preserved Renaissance ensemble dating from the early 16th century, unique in Hungary. These three architectural elements give the castle a clear architectural character: together, they form an ensemble whose classification and state of preservation are particularly noteworthy.

An early reference point in the town’s history is the year 1277. Simon, son of Salomon, had a tower built in the settlement during the reign of King Ladislaus IV. Later, the town and tower were named “Simontornya” after Simon and the tower. The dates mark different stages: 1277 represents the early tower and the history of the name, while the early 16th century marks the preserved Renaissance ensemble.

Exhibitions in the Castle

The exhibition “Nemesi ősgalériák Tolna megyében” (Aristocratic Ancestral Portrait Galleries in Tolna County) is on display on the first floor of the palace wing. It features full-length portraits of members of the Apponyi family. These are among the important works in Hungarian ancestral portrait galleries of the 18th century. The exhibition is one of the castle’s permanent exhibitions and links a specific family to the history of ancestral portrait galleries.

A larger room in the permanent exhibition explores medieval life in the castle. Documents from the period of Ottoman rule are kept in another room. Above the remains of the north wing, a modern protective building houses the castle’s stone collection. Together, these different areas offer thematic points of interest, from life inside the castle and historical documents to the stones of the complex.

A visitor app guides visitors around the grounds of Simontornyai Vár and explains the exhibition and the paintings in the gallery on the first floor of the palace. As the app’s availability may change, check before your trip whether it is currently available. If you plan to visit specific exhibitions or interior spaces, also check the latest opening hours and access conditions.

Monuments and Local History

Simontornya’s architectural heritage also includes Styrum-Linburg Castle, a Baroque building from the 17th century. The former Franciscan church is also listed as a national monument. Together with the castle, these buildings offer a broader view of local architecture. The monument designation is a historical and architectural classification; check separately for specific visiting information and opening hours.

The Local History House focuses on the Fried family and its role in developing leather production. Since 2 July 2006, the Local History House and the Legacy Gallery have been permanently housed in an 18th-century building. This adds the history of a family and an industry to the castle’s themes: while the exhibition in the palace wing features Apponyi portraits, the Local History House explores the development of leather production shaped by the Fried family.
