Koppányszántó: Church, Memorial and Koppány Landscape
Accommodation in Koppányszántó
Gently rolling terrain, the Koppány River and distinctive cultural landmarks shape Koppányszántó. These include the Szent Bertalan-apostol Templom, the Kammerer Ernő síremléke and the Szentháromság-mozaikkép; the Koppány-menti rétek also form a distinct natural attraction. You can therefore view the town from different perspectives: through its architectural history and memorials, as well as its landscape and biodiversity.
Landscape and Nature along the Koppány
Most of Koppányszántó lies north of the Koppány River, with a smaller part to the south. The landscape is gently rolling. To the southeast, the Koppány-menti rétek (HUDD20028) border the town. They are designated as a nature reserve of particular importance. If the precise current protection category is important for your plans, please check the latest information.
The Koppány-menti rétek are home to Eurasian otters, European pond turtles, Danube crested newts and European fire-bellied toads. Black alders and common ash trees also grow there. The natural attraction therefore encompasses both animal species and trees. Unlike the individual cultural landmarks, the focus here is on a named habitat.
The Szent Bertalan-apostol Templom
The present-day Szent Bertalan-apostol Templom was built in 1753 and extended with a side aisle in 1908. It is a simple Neoclassical building with a projecting section on one side and a bell tower at the main entrance. The church is dedicated to one of the twelve apostles and is surrounded by widely spaced deciduous trees. The construction year and extension can thus be clearly distinguished, while its Neoclassical design gives the building its architectural character.
Mosaic and Kammerer Tomb
The Szentháromság-mozaikkép depicts the Holy Trinity on a broad stone-built column. The Kammerer Ernő síremléke offers a different accent: the small tomb is designed to resemble a building and is associated with the organic architecture style. It was erected in 1920 to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Kammerer Ernő, the first director of the Szépművészeti Múzeum. The religious motif takes center stage in the mosaic, while the tomb is notable for its distinctive form and a specific historical occasion.
The Koppány kör Route
The “Koppány kör” route in the Koppányvölgy Natúrpark lists Koppányszántó as one of its stops. If you would like to include the route in your plans, check its current course and conditions before setting out.
