Kisszékely can be explored through two themes: its forest and lake landscapes, and its religious and rural history. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, these themes can help you narrow down your interests in advance. Barátok tava and the forests define the nature theme; Kálvária-domb, Ótemető and traditional farmhouses point to different aspects of the village’s history.

Forests and Barátok tava

Barátok tava, a popular fishing lake, lies on the northern edge of Kisszékely. Its immediate surroundings are characterised by diverse plant life and abundant wildlife. The lake brings the diversity of the local natural environment into focus, while the forests highlight continuity and the preservation of earlier forest types.

The forest area that shapes the landscape of Kisszékely has been continuous for centuries. It is one of the village’s most important natural heritage features and, at the same time, one of the most valuable forest complexes in the Tolnai-dombság. Kisszékelyi-erdő and Nagyszékelyi-erdő have best preserved the earlier forest types; their woodlands are particularly diverse and close to nature. These two named forest areas add a distinct focus to the landscape’s broader significance: the preservation of diverse, natural forest types.

Religious history and rural village character

Kálvária-domb and its surroundings form the medieval religious centre of Kisszékely. Ótemető lies on the slopes of the hill, where centuries-old wooden and stone crosses stand. The religious significance of the hill and the cemetery’s crosses thus come together in a clearly defined local theme.

Preserved traditional rural farmhouses from the early 20th century also contribute to the village’s distinctive character. Together, the religious significance of Kálvária-domb and the houses represent different periods in the village’s history: a medieval centre and a rural building style from the early 20th century.

The Local History Collection and School Exhibition opened in the former school building in 2011. Items and documents relating to the history of the school include old school desks, teaching aids and historic class photographs. The collection also features furnishings from a former farmhouse room and kitchen, as well as household and farming equipment and tools used by craftspeople. Its themes range from school and education to household life, agriculture and crafts, complementing the religious history with insights into everyday life.
