Between the Saale Valley and the Thuringian Forest

In the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district, the hiking landscape stretches from the Saale Valley to the Thuringian Forest. Quiet forests, sweeping views and cultural and historical sights define the trails. This makes it easy to explore the region in different ways: on hikes, on excursions along the Saale or by visiting historic sites.

Hiking between heathland and reservoir

The Hohenwarte Reservoir Trail is a quality hiking trail in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district, certified by the German Hiking Association. It offers an impressive nature experience on well-marked routes. Another hiking area is the Uhlstädter Heide: it includes a 1,082-hectare nature reserve with well-signposted hiking trails, well-maintained paths, benches and shelters. The Töpfersdorf church ruins lie in the heathland, in the Zeutsch district, and have long been a popular hiking destination.

For planning your hikes, the Thuringian Forest tour portal provides route descriptions, elevation profiles, information on places to stop for refreshments and GPS data for hikes in the district. Since portal content can change, it is best to check the details before your hike.

Cycling for all skill levels

In the district, the Saale Cycle Route combines nature and culture with a well-developed cycling infrastructure. In the municipality of Uhlstädt-Kirchhasel, the Saale Cycle Trail passes through the districts of Weißen, Uhlstädt, Zeutsch and Niederkrossen. When choosing a route, it is worth considering its character: the Feen-Bike Trail is technically demanding and suitable for experienced riders. The Schiefergebirgs-Trophy also offers challenging cycling routes that demand stamina and skill.

Out on the Saale

The Saale offers opportunities in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt area for relaxing or sporty canoe trips through unspoilt landscapes. For water-based excursions, boats can be rented at various locations, and guided tours and raft trips are also available; providers’ offerings may vary seasonally. Raft trips between Kirchhasel and Uhlstädt can be booked from April to October. Check the dates in advance when making your specific plans.

You can also combine your trip with a regional train journey: Uhlstädt station is right next to the site and offers hourly connections to Rudolstadt and Jena. Check the timetable for your travel day.

Cultural attractions and scenic views

Schloss Kochberg is located in Großkochberg. It is a Goethe memorial site run by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and the former residence of Charlotte von Stein. Schauenforst Castle Ruins are a landmark of Hexengrund, an idyllic side valley of the Saale between Zeutsch and Schmieden. In Uhlstädt, the Flößereimuseum near the sports centre displays memorabilia related to rafting on the Saale.

In Saalfeld, the Hoher Schwarm ruins are about a five-minute walk from the marketplace. The Luisenturm offers a different perspective on the landscape: built in 1864, it stands on the Hummelsberg near Kleinkochberg, which rises to over 500 metres. From there, the view extends across the Saale Valley, the Saale-Ilm Plateau, and the ridges of the Franconian Forest and the Thuringian Forest.
