Lichte: Streams, Slate Mountains and the Art of Drawing
Accommodation in Lichte
Landscape and Water
Lichte stretches along the Lichte and Piesau streams and is surrounded by the ridges of the Thuringian Slate Mountains. Streams and ridges form the town’s natural setting. If you are weighing landscape and cultural themes for your stay, they offer a starting point; the drawing and modelling school and the local history museum provide different points of focus.
In the wider region lies the Lichte-Leibis reservoir, with the Deesbach forebay. The reservoir was commissioned in 2005 to supply drinking water. This water-management connection adds another aspect to the landscape perspective: alongside the streams running through the town, the regional drinking water supply also plays a role.
Creative Activities and Local History
A drawing and modelling school is located in Geiersthal. Visitors can create objects from porcelain, ceramics, glass, wood, clay or plaster under expert guidance. This lets you add a hands-on creative activity to your stay. Before visiting, check the options for booking an appointment and the current opening hours.
The same building houses the local history museum, which brings the town’s history to life. Two different themes are therefore presented side by side: creating something yourself at the school and learning about local history at the museum. Their shared location brings these cultural highlights together without conflating their subject matter.
Rail-Bike Ride and Views
Rail-bike rides are offered on the railway line by the Max and Moritz Railway, providing views of Lichte and the surrounding landscape. Unlike the activities at the drawing and modelling school, the focus here is on the ride and the views. Check the current ride options before making plans.
Neuhaus am Rennweg in the Wider Destination
In the wider destination of Neuhaus am Rennweg, the Rennsteig Höhenwanderweg high-altitude trail runs right through the town. The “Bogenpfad am Rennsteig” begins and ends at the Igelshieb sports ground, near the Rennsteighaus. The Rennsteighaus is also close to the hiking car park and Igelshieb railway stop. It is a service station with showers, a toilet, a lounge and two outdoor bicycle lockers. Before visiting, check which facilities are currently available.
In Neuhaus am Rennweg, the Erlebnis Museum in the town centre presents the glassmaking and history of the Rennsteig town and invites visitors to immerse themselves in the life of the “Wäldler”. It invites visitors to listen, linger and take an active part. Also in the town centre stands the Gothic wooden church of Neuhaus am Rennweg. It was consecrated in 1892 and is one of the few churches in Germany built entirely of wood. Its windows feature geometric and ornamental stained glass, with the colours arranged to reflect the ripening of the grapes.
