When staying in Drognitz, hiking at the Hohenwarte Reservoir and exploring local history take center stage. Drognitz lies south of the reservoir on the old salt and trade route from Leipzig to Nuremberg. You can plan your trip around two main interests: a stage through the valley to the Saale or cultural and historical sights in the village.

Hiking at the Hohenwarte Reservoir

A large hiking car park, trail maps and well-marked paths help you find your way. The network of hiking trails in Drognitz lets you explore the landscape around the “Thuringian Sea,” with views of the Saale Cascade along the way. Drognitz also has a stop for the hiking bus on the Hohenwarte Reservoir Trail. Check the timetable for your travel date if you plan to use the hiking bus.

One specific hike is the fourth stage of the Hohenwarte Reservoir Trail. It leads from Drognitz to Lothramühle through an unspoilt valley, following the Meseritzbach stream downhill to the banks of the Saale. It then continues via the Hopfenmühle campsite to the Hermannsfelsen viewpoint. This route links the valley, stream and riverbank with clearly named stops. Hermannsfelsen lies along the route beyond the campsite and offers a good place to pause and take a break.

An approximately 75-kilometre circular hiking trail around the Hohenwarte Reservoir also runs directly above the Hopfenmühle campsite. The distinction is useful when choosing a hike: the stage leads from Drognitz to Lothramühle, while the circular trail goes all the way around the reservoir. This lets you choose between a point-to-point stage and a loop.

Shoreline and viewpoints

The Hopfenmühle campsite lies below Drognitz, directly on the shore of the Hohenwarte Reservoir. Swimming and boating are among the leisure activities offered during a stay at the campsite.

The Drachenschwanz viewpoint lies north of Drognitz. From there, you can see a narrow peninsula in the Hohenwarte Reservoir; the spot is also a rest area on the Hohenwarte hiking trail around the reservoir. So, alongside views of the Saale Cascade, this distinctive peninsula is another specific landscape feature in the area.

Cultural history in Drognitz

St. John’s Church has a Baroque pulpit altar with pilasters dating from 1701 and a Gothic baptismal font. The church thus brings together two distinct styles: Baroque in the pulpit altar and Gothic in the baptismal font. Pilasters are flat, column-like wall features; here, they are a specific detail of the altar. The contrast brings the church’s two art-historical features into focus.

The “Zum Wolf” inn is also part of the village’s history: it has a 500-year history and offers homemade cake in jars in a variety of flavours. Drognitz thus combines trails through the landscape with selected insights into the village’s history and present-day offerings.
