Krölpa offers several distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: St. Peter and Paul Church and the town’s history, the Zechstein Reef Pinsenberg Geo Adventure Trail, and a seasonal connection with nature in the municipality. This gives you the opportunity to decide whether historical context, a circular trail with a set time commitment, or observing nature in early spring should shape your stay.

Church, settlement history and castle

St. Peter and Paul Church is considered the oldest church in the Orla region. The imposing building stands on a hill on the edge of town and is visible from afar. The parish dates back to the 17th century. Krölpa was founded as a Sorbian settlement and was first mentioned in 1071 under the name “Cralip.” The settlement’s first mention in the 11th century and the 17th-century parish mark different periods in the town’s history.

Krölpa Castle was built around 1730 on the site of a former manor belonging to the von Brandenstein family. The castle was therefore built more than six centuries after Krölpa was first mentioned. The settlement’s history, the church and the castle offer different historical points of interest.

Zechstein Reef Pinsenberg Geo Adventure Trail

The Zechstein Reef Pinsenberg Geo Adventure Trail is a 5.5 km circular route; walking time is 1.5 to 2 hours. Its length and time commitment make it easier to assess the trail as a distinct part of your trip. It is suitable for families with children. At the same time, only parts of the route are paved, so it is only partially accessible to strollers and wheelchairs. If you are travelling with a stroller or wheelchair, take this limitation into account when planning.

On this circular trail, the distance and walking time are the main considerations; the church and castle, by contrast, are primarily about local history and architectural history. These different focuses can help you weigh your interests against the time available.

Seasonal connection with nature

In the municipality, you can observe pasqueflowers on the Clydenberg in early spring. They are protected and have become rare in the area. This connection with nature is tied to a particular season. That sets it apart from the historical themes and the circular trail: early spring is essential for seeing the flowers, while the stated time commitment shapes planning for the Geo Adventure Trail.

Saale-Orla as the broader setting

In the broader travel destination of Saale-Orla, the Saale River and its approximately 80-kilometre-long Saale Cascade, with five dams, form Europe’s largest contiguous reservoir area, known as the Thuringian Sea. Bleiloch Reservoir is Germany’s largest reservoir. This waterscape adds a distinct regional focus to Krölpa’s local themes.

The Museum Schloß Burgk is also a cultural highlight in the broader travel destination of Saale-Orla. It houses historic living and exhibition rooms with valuable interiors, as well as collections and exhibitions; concerts and festivals are also held there. Its ex libris collection comprises more than 200,000 prints and is the museum’s largest specialist collection. The cultural perspective in Saale-Orla therefore extends beyond Krölpa’s local history to include other explicitly regional themes.
