The Orla Cycle Path passes through Langenorla, giving the town a specific connection for cycling trips. In Langenorla Church, almost life-size wooden figures of Peter with the key and Moses with the tablets of the law stand to the left and right of the altar. Both figures date from the 17th century. Their attributes and their positions on either side of the altar make the historical sculptures easy to identify. Together, the cycle path and the church offer two different points of interest when choosing a destination: a route and a detail of cultural history.

More topics in the municipality

A section of the Luther Trail passes through the municipality of Langenorla and has been prepared for pilgrims, hikers, and visitors. If you plan to take this route, check the current trail conditions before setting out. The local history museum is also located in Langendembach, within the municipality. It offers insights into rural life in the past. The municipality thus has both a pilgrimage and hiking trail and a focus on rural history.

The wider Saale-Orla destination

In the wider Saale-Orla destination, landscape and water are among the defining themes. The Saale, together with the approximately 80-kilometre-long Saale Cascade, which is dammed five times, forms Europe’s largest contiguous reservoir area, the Thuringian Sea. Bleiloch Reservoir is Germany’s largest reservoir. These facts highlight different aspects: the Saale Cascade represents a contiguous reservoir area, while Bleiloch Reservoir is notable as a single, particularly large lake.

At Hohenwarte Reservoir, the Mühlenfähre ferry connects the landing stages at Linkenmühle and Altenroth. It operates seasonally; check the timetable and conditions when planning a crossing. The ferry is therefore a distinct point of reference for travelers exploring the waterscapes of the Saale-Orla area.

Hiking also has its place among the wider destination’s themes: Wurzbach offers more than 120 kilometres of signposted hiking trails for exploring the low mountain landscape. The Bismarck Tower near Neustadt an der Orla is 32.65 metres high. The medieval Hohe Straße runs directly past the tower. These two facts highlight different aspects: an extensive network of signposted trails in Wurzbach and the combination of a viewpoint with a historic ridgeway near Neustadt an der Orla.

Saale-Orla also offers clearly defined themes for culture enthusiasts. Museum Schloß Burgk houses historic residential and exhibition rooms with precious interiors, as well as collections and exhibitions. Its bookplate collection comprises more than 200,000 sheets and is the museum’s largest specialist collection. Concerts and festivals are also held there; for a specific date, it is advisable to check the event listings.

Europe’s largest and most powerful steam engine is located at the Heinrichshütte foundry. Heinrichshütte is an interactive, hands-on museum and welcomes families with children, as well as children from daycare centres and schools. At Museum642, visitors of all ages can explore the history of Pößneck on an individual multimedia tour through every level of the museum. These examples complement the themes of water, trails, and historic architecture with industrial and urban history in the wider Saale-Orla destination.
