Knau: Nature and History
Accommodation in Knau
Knau offers two very different circular walks and several distinct themes for a stay. The nature trail leads through the manor park; the Historical Circular Walk starts at the manor house and passes other named locations. Other features include the history of the former monastery estate, Freemasonic symbolism in the landscape garden, and a park for all generations. If you are looking for a hotel in Knau, plan your stay around whether nature, local history or recreational activities for the community are your priority.
Circular Walks Through Knau
The Knau Nature Trail is a 1.3-kilometre circular route through Knau Manor Park. Mature trees, ornithological diversity and Freemasonic design elements shape the route. Rare hedge and meadow birds, as well as cavity-nesting birds, can be observed in the manor park. In addition to its manageable length, the nature trail is defined by its parkland setting and opportunities for birdwatching.
A longer option is the 5.2-kilometre Historical Circular Walk. It starts at Knau Manor House and passes the Kleines Mordtal, the Oberlandbahn railway and Knauer Mühle. Unlike the nature trail, which runs through the manor park, this route is characterised by its starting point and the three named stops. When comparing the walks, it is therefore helpful to consider both their lengths—1.3 versus 5.2 kilometres—and their respective focus: parkland and nature observation on the one hand, and historically named waypoints on the other.
Manor Park, Manor House and Freemasonic Symbolism
The manor park connects nature with the history of the manor house. In 1601, the former monastery estate in Knau became a manor under the von Brandenstein family. The extensive parkland of the former manor dates from the 19th century; its features are associated with the symbolic language of the Freemasons. The conversion of the monastery estate and the later design of the park thus represent two different periods in the history of this place.
A 90-minute guided tour on Freemasonry in Knau’s listed landscape garden explores the interpretation of this symbolism. It begins in the manor courtyard. If you would like to plan for the tour, check booking arrangements with the Tourist Information Centre. The 90-minute duration refers to the tour, while the two circular walks are given in kilometres; you can therefore include it separately in your plans as a time commitment.
The Park for All Generations as a Separate Focus
Opened in 2020, the park for all generations offers a different focus from the historic manor park. It is a meeting place for visitors and the local community, with space for shared celebrations, cultural events and recreational activities for all ages. When planning your trip, the park’s purpose is relevant if you are looking for a place to meet or a cultural activity. If you are relying on a particular use, check the current conditions before your visit.
