Gahma is a small village in the Saale-Orla district, on the edge of the Thuringian Slate Mountains. It lies about 590 metres above sea level and offers expansive panoramic views across Thuringia. This gives the destination a clear connection to the landscape, complemented by cultural and community themes.

Sights and Local History in Gahma

The fortified church, visible from far away, is a prominent landmark in the village. It probably dates from the 12th century and is a listed building. It is therefore both a highly visible feature of the village and a protected historic monument. The NeumĂĽhle and ZschachenmĂĽhle also belong to Gahma; both are in the Sormitz Valley and represent a tradition of sawing and milling. Neither mill has survived in its typical form.

A park in Gahma invites visitors to take a stroll. Other sights include sculptures made from scrap metal. The Stone Museum/House and Farm Museum is located at ZschachenmĂĽhle 1 in Gahma, 07368 Remptendorf. If you are planning a visit, it is best to check current visiting arrangements in advance. This gives you a range of options for planning your visit: a walk, the local milling tradition, the fortified church or the museum.

Recurring Events

Every year, on the eve of 1 May, the maypole is put up in Gahma, followed by a convivial gathering around a bonfire. Another recurring event is the football tournament on the Saturday before Pentecost. The two events differ both in timing and character: the maypole is followed by a gathering around the fire, while the tournament gives Pentecost Saturday its own sporting occasion. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the current dates in advance.

Remptendorf as a Broader Travel Destination

Remptendorf is a unified municipality covering an area of about 100 km², situated in the heart of the Thuringian Slate Mountains/Upper Saale Nature Park. The forested area offers hiking trails leading to viewpoints with expansive vistas across the mountains and valleys of the Thuringian Slate Mountains. Attentive hikers may also spot boundary stones from times gone by. These hiking and landscape themes provide a distinct regional context alongside the sights in Gahma.

A striking structure in the Remptendorf destination is the Ziemestal Bridge. It belongs to the municipality of Remptendorf and is a 115-metre-long, 32-metre-high railway viaduct on the Triptis–Marxgrün line in Thuringia. The bridge is single-track and made entirely of steel; it was built between 1893 and 1895. One important point for finding your way around is the access rule: climbing onto or entering the Ziemestal Bridge, as well as accessing the railway line, is generally prohibited to unauthorised persons.
