Discover Schkölen: History, Nature and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Schkölen
When planning your stay in Schkölen, architectural history, landscape features and cycling connections offer different starting points. The town is home to the forest theatre, the Baroque church and the moated castle; nearby, you’ll also find Bronze Age graves, an old oak and hop fields. You can choose what to focus on depending on whether you’re especially interested in historic buildings, traces of cultural history or cycling routes.
Architecture and culture in Schkölen
The forest theatre is located in Schkölen’s town park. Schkölen’s Ottonian triangular market dates from the period between 919 and 1024. The Baroque church was built in 1755/56 on the foundations of an early Christian basilica. The market and church therefore represent different historical periods; the church’s Baroque construction stands on much older foundations.
Schkölen Moated Castle is a castle complex with a museum and changing exhibitions. If you’re planning a museum visit, check the current visiting arrangements in advance. This will help you coordinate your visit to the complex with your interest in a particular exhibition.
Landscape and hop-growing tradition
Near Schkölen, Dorstewitz and Lohholz are home to megalithic tombs and burial mounds dating from the Middle Bronze Age. An oak in the Fritschental valley is said to be 300 years old. The extensive hop fields of the Fuß hop-growing family in the Schkölen area bear witness to a long tradition of hop cultivation.
These themes offer different perspectives on the area: Bronze Age remains, a remarkable age of a tree and an agricultural tradition.
Cycling routes and other highlights in the Saale-Holzland region
The Energy Cycling Route and the cycle path along the former railway line connect Schkölen to the wider tourist region. If you’re planning a cycling stay, tailor your plans to your chosen route and check the route details for the section you want to ride.
The wider Saale-Holzland destination offers further cultural-history highlights. The Dornburg Palaces form an ensemble of three palaces from different stylistic periods. The Bauhaus Workshop Museum Dornburg is housed in the former Bauhaus ceramics workshop in the stable building of the Dornburg Palace complex. The permanent exhibition at the Bürgel Ceramics Museum illustrates the history of Bürgel’s pottery trade from its beginnings in the mid-17th century to the present day. An audio guide leads to 22 stops in Bürgel and Thalbürgel; check whether it is available before your trip.
The landscape and routes in the wider Saale-Holzland destination offer their own highlights, too: the Holzland is a hilly landscape with extensive woodland. The SaaleHorizontale, a certified quality hiking trail, runs north–south along the Saale through the Saale-Holzland district. The Saale Cycle Route also runs north–south along the Saale through the district. Both routes follow the same river direction but are suited to different activities: hiking on the SaaleHorizontale and cycling on the Saale Cycle Route. Well-maintained hiking trails run through the Zeitzgrund valley.
