Weißbach can be understood through the architectural history of its church. This leaves the choice open: should your trip focus primarily on church architecture, or would you also like to consider the region’s museums, routes, and landscapes?

Weißbach Church and Its Architectural History

Several phases of construction can be distinguished in the nave. It was extended and remodeled in 1698; its present appearance dates from the 1878 remodeling. The tower received its imposing crowning feature at the end of the 18th century. The dates therefore refer to different parts and changes to the church.

The furnishings also add to this view of different periods: the choir pews date from the early 19th century. The Baroque paintings on the church pews once decorated a Lutheran confessional. Thus, architectural changes and an earlier history of church use exist side by side in the same place.

Routes and Landscape

The Holzland is a hilly landscape with extensive forest areas. The SaaleHorizontale, a certified-quality hiking trail, runs north to south along the Saale through the Saale-Holzland district. The Saale Cycle Route also follows the Saale through the district in the same direction. Both routes follow the river, but differ in how you travel: the SaaleHorizontale is a hiking trail, while the Saale Cycle Route is a cycling route. Well-maintained hiking routes also lead through the Zeitzgrund. Canoeing and inflatable-boat trips are among the most popular outdoor activities in the Saale-Holzland district. The Gleistalhänge protected area includes Beutnitz, Graitschen, Löberschütz, Poxdorf, and Tautenburg; it covers the former Poxdorfer Hang nature reserve, spans 277.02 hectares, and was designated on August 27, 1999.

Castles, Palaces, and Museums

The historic buildings also offer a range of different highlights. The Dornburg Palaces form an ensemble of three palaces from different architectural periods. Hummelshain Hunting Lodge was a former hunting residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Altenburg. Camburg Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1166; today, only its more than 30-meter-high keep remains.

The Bauhaus Workshop Museum Dornburg is located in the former Bauhaus ceramics workshop in the Marstall building of the Dornburg palace complex. In Schkölen, the moated castle is a castle complex with a museum and changing exhibitions. These places combine architectural history and museum offerings in different ways.

The region’s museums cover topics ranging from crafts to local history. The permanent exhibition at the Bürgel Ceramics Museum illustrates the history of Bürgel pottery from its beginnings in the mid-17th century to the present day. The Camburg Municipal Museum displays exhibits ranging from Stone Age hand axes to tools and weapons from various cultural groups, as well as items from the town’s more recent history. The Kemenate Orlamünde houses an exhibition on local history. An audio guide leads to 22 stops in Bürgel and Thalbürgel; check its availability before your trip.
