Weißenborn: History Around Milo Barus
Accommodation in Weißenborn
Anyone looking for a hotel in Weißenborn will find two specific themes in the town’s history: its former role as a holiday destination and its connection with Milo Barus and the Meuschkensmühle. You can find more cultural and landscape topics in the wider Saale-Holzland destination.
Weißenborn’s history as a holiday destination
From the 1950s to the 1970s, Weißenborn was a very popular holiday destination. This historical period offers a distinctive perspective on the town. Another leads to Milo Barus and the buildings at the Meuschkensmühle.
Milo Barus and the Meuschkensmühle
Milo Barus, also known as Emil Bahr, spent many years in Thuringia. For a time, he ran the Meuschkensmühle. Opposite it, he built a home for his later years: a little house in the Swiss style. The mill is therefore a tangible point of reference in the history of the strength athlete and performer.
The “Milo Barus” Museum in Weißenborn is located at the Meuschkensmühle. It includes the Emil Bahr Documentation Center, which presents a portrait of Milo Barus’s life. If you are planning a visit, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.
Another chapter in the town’s history also took place near the mill: around 1930, the municipality of Weißenborn operated a pond not far from the Meuschkensmühle as a forest swimming pool. The name of the former pool was Meuschkensbad.
The Mühltal valley near Eisenberg is close to the destination. It is suitable for hiking, cycling, and horse-drawn carriage rides. Alongside Weißenborn’s historical connections, a range of activities in the nearby area can therefore help you plan your visit.
