Hermsdorf: Half-timbered houses, street festival and technological history
Accommodation in Hermsdorf
If you are looking for a hotel in Hermsdorf, you can choose where to stay based on your travel interests: the town offers historic buildings, sites commemorating its technical heritage, an annual street festival and an outdoor swimming pool, covering a range of interests. Architecture and tradition meet technical attractions and leisure facilities. The highlights below give you a concrete impression of what makes Hermsdorf a great place to stay.
Historic buildings in Hermsdorf
The historic street “Alte Regensburger” has a distinctly regional character, with its half-timbered houses. Hermsdorf’s town hall has stood for over 100 years; its Baroque exterior still largely resembles its appearance when it opened more than 115 years ago. The two sights offer different points of interest: half-timbered houses shape the character of an entire street, while the town hall showcases the appearance of a single building.
Street festival and traditions
The Hermsdorf street festival has been held annually since 1993 on Open Monument Day, the second Sunday in September. Numerous craftspeople demonstrate traditional crafts at the festival, which also features a varied cultural program. There are lots of activities for young visitors to watch and take part in. If you plan to include the festival in your trip, check the date for the year of your stay. The annual Maypole Raising is also one of the old traditions in the Holzland and in several other places in the region. The first Maypole Raising in Hermsdorf took place in 1854.
Technical collection and high-power test transmitter
The Technical Collection is housed in the historic town hall at Eisenberger Straße 56, through the entrance on the left-hand side. Tours of the collection are available by arrangement. A separate technical attraction is HESCHO’s 40-kW high-power test transmitter at Eisenberger Straße 81. It remains at its original location on the ground floor of a building now used as a medical center and has been added to the list of protected sites as a technical monument. Tours of the transmitter include technical explanations. If required, an insulator flashover can be demonstrated using a 100-kV alternating-voltage system. This technical exhibit is open annually during the Hermsdorf “Alte Regensburger Straße” street festival. For planning purposes, note the different visiting arrangements at the two sites: tours of the collection are available by arrangement, while tours with technical explanations are offered at the transmitter, which also opens annually for the festival.
Outdoor pool and choosing where to stay
The Hermsdorf outdoor pool has a 25-meter swimming pool and a leisure pool with a large water slide, current channel, water jets and fountains. A sunbathing lawn with a beach volleyball court and table tennis table complements the pools. This gives you a choice of swimming and leisure pools, as well as activities on land. Check the current opening hours before your visit.
Alt-Hermsdorf, the historic part of town, is characterized by restaurants and accommodation in buildings renovated in keeping with their protected status. For travel planning, the A4 from Dresden to Frankfurt/Main and the A9 from Berlin to Munich provide geographic reference points: the motorways intersect at Hermsdorf. You can determine which route suits your trip based on your starting point.
