Monastery church and local history
The Bad Klosterlausnitz monastery church is a pillar basilica with an Early Romanesque eastern section and a Neo-Romanesque western section. The description thus distinguishes the building type from the stylistic designations of its two parts.
The Altes Sudhaus local history museum tells the story of the town from 1137 onward and displays exhibits about working and living in the Holzland in earlier times. It is housed in a half-timbered building considered the last remnant of Bad Klosterlausnitz’s 300-year brewing tradition.
The history of local festivals also offers a look back at Klosterlausnitz: the carpenters’ guild’s handicrafts festival was held every year at Whitsun. It was called Hambrich or Hombrich and had the character of a fair.
Saale-Holzland as a regional setting
In the wider Saale-Holzland destination, the Holzland is a hilly landscape with extensive forest areas. For hiking and cycling, the named routes differ by activity: the SaaleHorizontale is a quality hiking trail, while the Saale Cycle Route is a cycling route. Both run north–south along the River Saale through the Saale-Holzland district. Well-developed hiking routes also lead through the Zeitzgrund. Canoeing and inflatable-boat tours are also among the most popular outdoor activities in the Saale-Holzland district.
The wider Saale-Holzland destination also offers a range of cultural themes. The Dornburg Palaces form an ensemble of three palaces from different stylistic periods. The BĂĽrgel Ceramics Museum offers a different focus: its permanent exhibition illustrates the history of BĂĽrgel pottery from its beginnings in the mid-17th century to the present day. An audio guide leads visitors to 22 stops in BĂĽrgel and ThalbĂĽrgel; check its availability before your trip.
Historic buildings in Saale-Holzland also offer a variety of points of interest: Schkölen Water Castle is a castle complex with a museum and changing exhibitions; the Kemenate Orlamünde houses an exhibition on local history. Camburg Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1166, and today only its keep, more than 30 metres high, remains. Hummelshain Hunting Lodge was formerly a hunting residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Altenburg.
