Altenburger Land: Culture, Landscapes and Culinary Delights

In Altenburger Land, Romanesque towers, the history of the former royal residence, collections, and trails through gently rolling countryside come together. The Rote Spitzen are the surviving Romanesque towers of a former Augustinian canon monastery and are recognized as a cultural monument of national importance. Residenzschloss Altenburg provides a different architectural accent: it stands on a porphyry rock and houses the Palace and Playing Card Museum. The religious building and the residence offer two different ways to explore cultural history.

Palace, Playing Cards and Art Collections

The Playing Card Museum is one of the oldest and most extensive museums of its kind in Europe. Its subject forms a distinct focus alongside the architecture of Residenzschloss Altenburg. The Lindenau Museum provides a different cultural accent: it owns 180 valuable panels of early Italian painting dating from the 13th to the 16th century. The Mauritianum Natural History Museum, in turn, displays a historic bird collection, fossils from lignite mines, and an interactive area devoted to local flora and fauna. Altenburger Land thus brings together a range of subjects, from playing cards and painting to natural history.

Castles, Regional History and Pilgrim Routes

Posterstein Castle Museum presents exhibitions on the cultural history of the region. The Brothers’ Church is also connected with historic routes: since 2014, it has served as a pilgrimage and information center for the Luther Trail and the old imperial road Via Imperii. On Foot, by Bike and Through the Countryside

Altenburger Land is characterized by gently rolling hills, extensive forests, and idyllic bathing lakes. The Altenburg Botanical Experience Garden offers a place to relax and unwind. For walking tours, the modern Neuseen-Challenge long-distance trail runs through Altenburger Land; its waymarker is a bright neon-yellow shoe. The Luther Trail also crosses the area and can be followed as a pilgrimage route. Those who want to explore by bike have another option in the Pleiße Cycle Route, which also passes through Altenburger Land. The routes therefore differ in purpose, from long-distance hiking and pilgrimage to cycling.

The Coal Railway has a distinctive route: this traditional 900 mm narrow-gauge railway runs for 15 kilometers from the outskirts of Meuselwitz through the Schnaudertal valley. It provides a separate attraction alongside the walking and cycling routes.
