Altkirchen offers two distinct highlights for a visit: the village museum and the outdoor pool. The museum focuses on village history, rural everyday life and nature, while the pool centres on swimming and outdoor recreation. Visits to the museum require prior arrangement; the outdoor pool is open seasonally. This lets you plan your time in Altkirchen around the subjects that interest you most.

Altkirchen Village Museum: Village History, Everyday Life and Nature

Altkirchen Village Museum has five exhibition rooms with more than 2,000 exhibits across approximately 300 m² of exhibition space. The permanent exhibition spans four rooms and uses information panels and objects to offer insights into the origins of the villages. The collections include soil-working equipment, tools used in local village trades, and household items from rural homes. Altenburg farmers’ traditional dress is also represented, including a bride’s richly decorated headdress. The topics therefore range from work and household life to clothing and regional dress.

The fifth room houses a nature cabinet offering insights into the flora and fauna of the surrounding area. Its exhibits include core samples and the “Göllnitz Wonder Tree”. Museum visits are possible by prior arrangement with Thomas Brand at 0152-09418489.

Altkirchen Outdoor Pool: Swimming and Outdoor Recreation

Altkirchen Outdoor Pool offers a well-maintained sunbathing lawn for sunbathing and picnics, a beach volleyball court, table tennis tables, a kiosk and an adjacent playground. The 50-metre sports pool is intended for active swimmers; next to it is a separate non-swimmer area with a children’s slide and various play options. This makes it possible to combine different swimming areas and outdoor activities.

The season runs from May to September. Check the latest operating information before your visit.

Schmölln in the Wider Region: Museum and Water Adventure Trail

In the wider regional context of Schmölln, the Schmölln Button and Regional Museum offers a different thematic focus. It presents the eventful history of the button industry, in which button-making from tagua nuts played a special role. The exhibits also include raw materials used in button-making, equipment and historical machines. This industrial focus distinguishes the Schmölln museum from the rural and natural history perspective of Altkirchen Village Museum. Other historical landmarks in Schmölln include St. Nikolai Church, built in the 15th century, and the market square, one of the largest market squares in Central Germany.

In the wider regional context of Schmölln, the Schmölln Button and Regional Museum offers families and children an audio guide; workshops are intended for children and young people. Guided tours of the permanent exhibition are available by appointment. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, check the appointment details or current availability in advance.

The Sprotte Water Adventure Trail is another example from the wider regional context of Schmölln. It follows the Sprotte between Posterstein and Schmölln, is nine kilometres long and has twelve interactive stations and activities. The route has only gentle inclines. Facilities include a mill-themed playground, bridges and fords, the Weidendorf and a Kneipp trail; it is particularly inviting for younger visitors to play and explore.
