Nobitz brings together several themes to consider when planning a trip: aviation history at the Flugwelt Altenburg-Nobitz museum, distinctive buildings in its districts, and cycling and pilgrimage routes across the municipality. When choosing a destination, visitors can weigh up a museum visit, architectural details and routes with different itineraries. The places and routes below give a concrete impression of what you can focus on during a stay in Nobitz.

Aviation and Architectural Heritage

The Flugwelt Altenburg-Nobitz museum presents the history of the airfield and topics related to aviation through a wide range of exhibits. The collection includes, among other things, a MiG-21 SPS and a Breguet BR1150 “Atlantic”. The museum is open from April to October on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. As seasonal opening hours may change, check the times before your visit. The museum’s outdoor area also gives visitors access to a former naval aircraft. Confirm the current access conditions before planning to visit this part of the museum.

The districts also feature a range of examples of architectural heritage. Gieba is home to a restored farmhouse considered the oldest farmhouse in the Altenburg region. Numerous striking half-timbered buildings shape the townscape of Nobitz and its districts. The churches across the municipality each have distinctive interiors, histories and features. Mockern Church houses a carved Madonna; Zürchau Church has tracery windows dating from the time it was built. In Maltis, a round-arched portal and a radiant door are among the notable architectural details. Instead of numerals, the clock face of the church tower clock in Saara bears the words “Make use of time”. Together, these examples show how varied the local features are.

Cycling Routes, Pilgrimage Route and Nature Oasis

The Pleiße Cycle Route runs through Nobitz, where it crosses the “Altenburg–Colditz” cycling tour. Check current route conditions before setting out. The Sculpture Trail follows a different course, running along the Sprotte through the municipality to the Selleris weir. The Way of St. James passes through Borna and Altenburg, then continues through the municipality of Nobitz towards Zwickau. Check the current route markings before setting out. Hiking and cycling are also among the leisure activities available in Nobitz. The routes mentioned differ in their courses and focus, from the cycle-route junction to the trail along the Sprotte and the pilgrimage route.

The nature oasis in Saara offers a different way to explore local themes. Three large information boards cover the mill, the park’s avenue trees, the birdhouse, nesting boxes and hedges. Five small information boards focus on a millstone, a baking recipe, two puzzles and a specimen tree. The nature oasis also includes a walk-in wooden mill with seating for children. The boards and the mill make this a specific destination alongside the routes that cross the municipality.

The Märchensee is located in the Leinawald forest. Close to Nobitz, the Schömbach Reservoir lies right next to the Leinawald; its accessible dam wall invites visitors to take a walk. This offers two different ways to enjoy nature: the lake in the forest and a walk along the dam wall.
