Gelting: Nature and History
Accommodation in Gelting
Gelting combines nature experiences with historical themes. The focus is on the Geltinger Birk and its trails, as well as the history of the church, estate, and mill. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to set aside more time for the landscape or for the town’s cultural heritage.
Landscape and trails around the Geltinger Birk
The 773-hectare Geltinger Birk nature reserve lies northeast of Gelting. Dunes, marshland, heath, moorland, and open woodland shape the landscape. You can explore the area on foot along its trails. With a little luck, you can watch Highland cattle and Konik horses grazing on the natural pastures.
The circular trail through the Geltinger Birk is approximately 12 km long. Geltinger Noor and Mühle Charlotte, as well as the Falshöft lighthouse, are listed as access points. The approximate distance gives you an idea of the length of the route; no walking time is specified.
Other trails differ both in length and in their routes. Route Krebs covers about 6 km, starting in Gelting and passing through Lehbek, Gut Ohrfeld, and Wackerballig before returning to Gelting. Route Biene is longer at approximately 8 km, running from Gelting via Sillekjer, Rabenholz, and Holmkjer Forest back to the starting point. Route Schwan is also about 6 km long: it runs from Wackerballig via DĂĽstnishy and Nordschauwald and back to Wackerballig. The approximate lengths and listed stops make it easy to distinguish between these routes.
Church, estate, and mill
St. Catherine’s Church in Gelting was probably built shortly after 1300. During a major renovation in 1793, the choir was enlarged; the organ was fully restored in 2007. The church also contains a former high altar scene dating from 1520 to 1530. It was carved by a master from the circle of Lübeck sculptor Claus Berg.
Gut Gelting, also known as Gelting Castle, is approximately 800 years old and is one of the oldest estates in Angeln. The manor house is privately owned and is not open to visitors. Check visitor access again before your trip.
MĂĽhle Charlotte stands on Geltinger Noor at the entrance to the Geltinger Birk. It was built in 1826 to drain the Noor and grind grain. Today, the mill is privately owned and has been converted into a holiday home. Before planning a visit, check again whether its private-use status has changed.
More cultural impressions
The Gelting Shanty Choir preserves original shanties associated with 19th-century sailing ships. This offers a different cultural perspective for visitors than the church’s architectural and art history or the history of the mill.
The season also shapes a stay: a hot Angler Muck is considered a typical winter drink in Gelting. Its ingredients are not described here, but its seasonal connection is clear. Together with the landscape of the Birk and its varied trails, it offers another local point of interest when planning your stay.
