Geltinger Bay: Sailing, Nature and Coastal Paths
Accommodation in Geltinger Bay
Geltinger Bay can be explored from different perspectives: sailing and surfing, cycling along the coast, protected marine nature and a bathing beach each offer a different focus. If you are planning a hotel stay, it is best to consider in advance which of these aspects matter for your trip. The harbour, cycle paths, protected areas and historic buildings offer concrete points of reference.
Water Sports and Wackerballig Harbour
Geltinger Bay offers areas for surfing and sailing. Wackerballig Marina is located right on the bay and on the open Baltic Sea. Wackerballig Sports Harbour was inaugurated on 18 July 1980 and has 234 berths and a 220-metre-long jetty. This adds specific information about a harbour location to the water sports area. For orientation, the activities are described in different ways: sailing and surfing are mentioned as activities in the bay; swimming, bathing and diving are permitted in the specifically designated marine nature reserve.
Marine Nature and Protected Areas
The marine nature reserve “Ostseefläche Geltinger Bucht bis Schleimündung” was designated in 2026. Swimming, bathing and diving are permitted in this area. Geltinger Birk is another natural feature: within the nature reserve, a seagrass meadow about 1,000 metres long extends into Geltinger Bay. The seagrass meadow describes a specific natural area; the region’s reef system extends much farther.
The second-largest continuous reef system in the Baltic Sea off Schleswig-Holstein extends from Geltinger Bay beyond SchleimĂĽnde. Large parts of it are protected by marine nature reserves. This means that different scales come into view when considering marine nature: the seagrass meadow, about 1,000 metres long, that extends into the bay, and a reef system that reaches beyond SchleimĂĽnde.
Cycling and Walking at Geltinger Birk
The developed walking and cycling path “around the Birk” is about 12 kilometres long. It runs mostly along the dyke around the Geltinger Birk nature reserve and connects the two entrances to the Birk. The path is a useful guide if you would like to explore Geltinger Birk on foot or by bike; it is designated for both activities.
Many cycle paths along the coast of Geltinger Bay offer views across the bay as far as Denmark. When cycling, you can weigh up different interests: the “around the Birk” route is described by its length and its course around the protected area, while the views across the bay to Denmark are a particular point of reference for the coastal cycle paths.
Mill, Lighthouse and Bathing Beach
Charlotte Mill was built in 1826 as a ground-level Dutch windmill. It was used to drain the Noor and grind grain. The historic Falshöft Lighthouse stands on the coast of Geltinger Bay. The two buildings have different historical significance: the mill’s year of construction and original functions are specified, while the lighthouse is described in terms of its historical status and coastal location.
Geltinger Bay’s bathing beach lies between Norgaardholz and Ohrfeld. There is a playground there, and use of the lido and car park is free of charge. A campsite is nearby. For planning purposes, the key details are its location between the two villages and the facilities mentioned at the beach.
Choose a Focus for Your Trip
When looking for a hotel in Geltinger Bay, you can first decide what you would like to focus on during your trip: water sports, nature, a walk or cycle ride, coastal views or a visit to historic buildings. There is also a specific distinction to note when cycling: the “around the Birk” route is about 12 kilometres long; many coastal cycle paths offer views as far as Denmark. This lets you plan your trip around the interests you want to shape your stay.
