There are many reasons to choose Maasholm as a travel destination: a walk takes you to the harbour and through the town’s history, sailing and other water sports are available on the water, and paths invite you to explore on foot or by bike. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, you can consider whether you are more interested in the townscape, activities on the water or the surrounding landscape.

Harbour and local history

The historic village walk can take in the harbour, sheltered moorings for boats on the Schlei, St Peter’s Church, the listed 1916 sea rescue station and fishermen’s houses with thatched roofs. The same walk brings together maritime connections and village architecture. A small fishing museum covering the history of local fishing is located in the tourist information office. It also provides regional brochures and information panels about Maasholm and the surrounding area. You can borrow boules there for the boules court next to the motorhome site.

Sailing and other activities on the water

Sailing training for small groups is offered on the Schlei at Maasholm’s marina. When the wind is right, you can sail past the lighthouse and out to sea. Many water sports activities can be started directly from Maasholm. You can learn to windsurf and wingfoil on the Wormshöfter Noor; a surf school is located right on the shore. The availability of activities may vary depending on the operator.

Excursion boats on the Schlei depart from the Schumacher Bridge in Maasholm. As departure arrangements may vary, it is best to check the information for your chosen date.

Walking routes: from the nature trail to the long-distance trail

A two-kilometre nature trail connects the Exhöft hiking car park with the Maasholm Nature Experience Centre. A route of almost three kilometres starts at the harbour and follows the Schlei dike via Hegeberg to the Nature Experience Centre, or continues as far as the Baltic Sea. The centre has a wind, water and coast-themed playground and offers nature experience programmes for tourists, school classes, groups and children celebrating their birthdays. The availability of these programmes may vary seasonally.

For longer hikes, the Nature Park Hiking Trail begins in Maasholm, in Schlei Nature Park. It crosses four nature parks in Schleswig-Holstein. The 180-kilometre route is marked in both directions with yellow arrows and can also be walked in shorter sections or as circular routes. This means the two local routes, with their specific connections, can be contrasted with a trail that can be explored in sections.

Cycling and nature in the surrounding area

The “Via Altona to Belgrade” cycling route starts and ends in Maasholm and is about 35 kilometres long. When planning, you should take local path conditions into account. A Baltic Sea beach can be reached from Maasholm in about ten minutes by car or 15 minutes by bike.

The nearby Geltinger Birk includes beaches, lagoons, salt marshes, coastal forests, steep coastal cliffs and moorland. Within the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination, at 773 hectares it is the largest nature reserve in the Schleswig-Flensburg district. During bird migration, you can watch birds from Mühle Charlotte, the Beveroe Bridge and along the Krötenweg near Falshöft.
