Visitors choosing Aumühle as a destination will find attractions to suit a range of interests: mill history, Bismarck memorial sites, railway heritage and nature experiences. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus more on historical collections and trails or on a visit to the butterfly garden.

Mill History and Bismarck Memorial Sites

The Fürst Bismarck Mill stands by the millpond in Aumühle. This former grain watermill was first documented around 1350. The Otto von Bismarck Foundation in Aumühle offers another way to explore Bismarck’s history. Housed in the historic railway station, it preserves unique documents relating to his political work. The Friedrichsruh Bismarck Museum displays historical objects associated with Bismarck, including a reconstruction of his study with original furniture. The exhibits may change; if you specifically want to visit this exhibition, check the latest information in advance.

The Max-Schmeling-Weg passes the historic Marstall and the Bismarck Museum. This makes it possible to combine a circular walk with stops exploring local history. The route is 6.05 kilometres long and rated easy. Check the latest route information before setting out.

Railway History at the Locomotive Shed

At the Aumühle Railway Museum, visitors can explore locomotive cabs and see changing exhibitions in a former S-Bahn carriage. On activity and family days, visitors can try a hand-powered trolley from the 1920s; short rides on the narrow-gauge railway are also available then. Groups can arrange guided tours as well as rides on the hand-lever trolley and narrow-gauge railway outside regular Sunday opening hours. If a guided tour or ride is important to you, check the available options in advance as a group or by consulting the event dates.

Butterflies and Trails in the Sachsenwald

The Friedrichsruh Butterfly Garden features a 450-square-metre tropical greenhouse with more than 1,000 butterflies. The park grounds are also part of the visitor experience, with space for walks, play and outdoor relaxation. If you are planning to travel from Hamburg, you can reach Aumühle station on the S7 S-Bahn line. From there, a 1.8-kilometre walking trail through the Sachsenwald leads to the butterfly garden.

Aumühle is also a starting point for hikes in the Sachsenwald. The Eisvogelweg begins at Aumühle station, passes the millpond area, follows the Bille and extends to the Billetal nature reserve. The Sachsenwald is a continuous forest of around 70 square kilometres in Schleswig-Holstein. The Bille and its tributaries run through the area, and hiking trails offer opportunities for recreational outings.

The two trails can be chosen based on different details: for the Max-Schmeling-Weg, the stated length and easy rating of the circular route provide guidance; for the Eisvogelweg, its route along the Bille and its destination at the nature reserve are useful points of reference. The Sachsenwald also has more than 48.4 kilometres of riding trails. The Sachsenwald Riding School in Aumühle teaches children to ride.
