Wentorf near Hamburg combines a striking historic manor house with a diverse cultural offering and designated walking areas. To help you choose your destination, you will find insights into the town’s history as well as specific starting points for exploring art and nature.

Historic Manor House and Art

The listed manor house at GolfstraĂźe 5 is an English country-house-style estate built in 1914 and 1921, designed by August Ott and William Rzekonski. It is part of the former Weltevreden estate complex. In the northern part of the park, the house stands at the highest point of the Bille riverbank. A lawn lies to the west, while trees surround the other sides.

Historic interior details have been preserved, including stucco ceilings, wooden coffered ceilings, Delft tiles, and doors and windows with leaded glass. Since 2018, the manor house has accommodated the Woods Art Institute’s event and seminar rooms. Its WAI Galleries present changing exhibitions across 2,300 square metres, including painting, sculpture, installation, video art, performance and photography.

The central exhibition building alternates between the Reinking Collection and changing solo exhibitions. The grounds also include a sculpture garden and a historic arboretum. The sculpture park is set within a historic park landscape, with paths, terraced levels and mature trees, and invites visitors to stroll. In addition to its exhibition programme, the Woods Art Institute offers art courses. Visits are possible only as guided tours; book tickets through the Woods Art Institute website. Check the booking conditions before you travel.

The archive regularly hosts talks, exhibitions and excursions, usually in cooperation with the Wentorf Citizens’ Association. Its publications on regional history include Wentorf – The Local History Book, as well as stories about the history of Wentorf’s villa districts and Wentorf-Süd. Different topics thus offer ways to explore local history, from an overview of Wentorf to individual neighbourhoods.

Walks and Outdoor Activities

Lohe and Bergedorfer Gehölz are considered suitable areas for walks. The ravines in Hohler Grund and new green corridors on the former barracks site are also designated for this purpose. The options therefore include both wooded areas and green spaces with a distinctive former use. Wentorf also offers local opportunities for hiking, cycling and horse riding.

If you are planning your stay beyond the town itself, the wider destination of the Duchy of Lauenburg offers its own regional landscape setting: 26 percent of the district is forest, and it has 48 lakes. The Sachsenwald, Schleswig-Holstein’s largest contiguous forest, is also located there.
